Just had to share
Yesterday I finally conquered a big problem for me. I"m blind in one eye which throws off my depth perception (like I have none). I finally was able to sew a straight stitch that was 1/4" and looked good. I haven't been able to do that 4 years. Yippee. I know that sounds ridiculously insignificant but to me it was monumental and I just wanted to share with my quilting family.j

Re: Just had to share
Good for you! I have a problem with depth perception too but still have both eyes. It is corrected with glasses and I must wear them or things get off.

Re: Just had to share
I think it's a BIG deal Mary and am happy for you. May you sew many more straight lines!!

Re: Just had to share
I knew we had something in common.
Never thought of that being the reason I can't sew straight though.

Re: Just had to share
I think this is monumental too! So happy for you! Our body doesn't always cooperate, but when we learn to adapt, look out! Nice work!

Re: Just had to share
Thanks everyone. When I'm not careful I run right off the edge so quickly it's hard to catch. hahaha.

Re: Just had to share
Mary, that IS a big deal! Very happy for you, we sometimes don't realize how important something like this is, and as we get older, we aren't quite as quick to compensate for changes in our body. Whoever said, "Getting old isn't for sissies, was exactly correct!"

Re: Just had to share
Good job! I'm also legally blind it one eye and have been so all my life.
Mine is my left eye and I've learned to compensate for it with my right eye, my right eye is good for sewing because that is the side of the presser foot the seam is on. I have told DH and told him....when you're walking with me - walk on the right because I never know if you've wandered off if you're on the left. I can't just look out of the corner of my left eye to see if he's still with me.

Re: Just had to share
Mary, that's great! What did you do? Isn't it wonderful when we figure out how to do something that has been so difficult for us.

Re: Just had to share
My SECRET. Go slowly and stay calm.
I had a stroke in my eye. Can't see anything usually but on a good day once in a while I get some light peripherally.
I put my left index finger next to my sewing machine foot and lightly touch it. Be careful. And then I put my right hand closer to me lightly touching the fabric. I sometimes have to just stop, give up my ego and frog it. I started a new quilt today called touchdown. It has small 1" strip sets. I got it done right. The area that is the football lacing is what the strip sets are for. They turned out beautifully and I'm so selfishly proud of myself.
I have only been blind in that eye since 2009. And it happened at night in a second.
Hope that helps.

Re: Just had to share
Congratulations, Mary!!! I also have vision issues. (detached retina repaired but vision is off). Usually sew with one eye closed. I'm so happy that you jumped this hurdle. And pride is not selfish!!!! You earned it.
