Quilting / Sewing project - Need classroom school auction ideas!
Hi All!
I am planning to help one of my children's classrooms at school create a work of art for the school auction this year. My strength is sewing... not the ideas!
Generally the projects include the kids in the creation. One year I gave all of the kids a bag of fabric each cut from a single block. I had them make tangrams (as they were doing those in class), then I appliqued them onto denim blocks and created floor pillows with their picture and embroidered each of their names next to the block.
I think these auctioned for $80.

Does anybody have other ideas that could be used for a class project creation? I want the kids to have some ownership. My sons class is Kindergarten and my Daughters class is 3rd grade.
The more original and useful, the more money it raises for the school!

Honestly, I got nothing. Not one idea in my big ole head.
However I will be on the lookout for you as I surf the net tonight. Hope someone more idea-y comes along and can help.

How about having the kids make batik blocks - here is a good tutorial that artist woman: How to do Batik with Kids
Then you could make them into pillows or table runners, etc, depending on the size squares you start with.

Lorie - great minds think alike! That is the same method! I may have to try this with the niece and nephew.

Wow, $80! That's great! If all else fails, at least you know you can do them again. How about a similar procedure on a christmas stocking? Or...give them each a 12x12 piece of cotton and some scraps and have them cut the scraps to make a design, and hand sew them in place. Then you machine sew them as needed and make a lap size quilt out of them. 16 blocks for a lap size quilt would be 48x48, you could get 2 laps out of each class. Or maybe denim aprons...and the kids fabric paint on them. Good luck to you and the kids....hope everyone has fun!

You can also do it with crayons
I have one in my albums (irish chain) with crayon blocks (charity album)
I have made quilts for school auction items
tape fabric squares to table
draw picture with a crayon
heat set with tissue paper as a pressing cloth and no steam, repeat until color does not come off on paper
sew away - use in whatever project.
