Question; Does size matter???
Now that I have your attention
Hubby and I had a conversation this morning. He says all quilts I make should be queen sized, they should all be able to fit on a bed. We have 5 queen sized beds on our house, and he says that way I could switch them all out and around when and where I want them. Any quilt I make should be able to fit a bed!!
but
I like smaller, about 70x70 type things, I like to take to odd nap, that size is perfect. I like to sit and watch tv or read on the couch, that size is perfect. I like to take a quilt with my when we travel or go for a drive, cause I hate AC, that size is perfect for that!!
So my question is, what size of quilt do you tend to make, what is your "go-to" size??
-
Re: Question; Does size matter???
I used to be of the opinion that quilts should fit a bed - twin, double, queen or king
Except for baby quilts - no wider than the WOF
So the only addition to my belief are lap quilts, which in my opinion is anything between the above two categories.
Table Mats, Table Runners, Pot Holders are a different category altogether.
And wall quilts' sizes - hmmm - now that is a trick question. Isn't it?

Re: Question; Does size matter???
I like the throw size.........sizes that are good for covering up while watching tv or reading. They don't all have to go on the bed. :)

Re: Question; Does size matter???
If it's for you it's whatever size you want!!! Queens are nice for the beds too but too big for snuggle time.
-
Re: Question; Does size matter???
If they are bed size, you will always be able to have them in use. But how many throws can you really use? I like to make them bed size.

I do agree there, I already have about 4 hanging on my quilt ladder, so how many more do I need. But a bed size like he aid I can switch them out

Re: Question; Does size matter???
Most of the quilts I make are baby quilts. I usually make them no wider than ~39" so I can use the WOF for the backing w/o piecing. I can squeak by if there's only ~1.5" to 2" on each side. I make the backing at least 6" longer than the length. After quilting, I save the wider fabric strips for future projects, either piecing or strips for strip quilts. I save the strips of batting as well. They can be cut into smaller pieces for stuffing small pillows or other sewing projects. Wider batting strips I piece for my practice sandwiches. Very little goes to waste at my house.
If I'm going to make a bed sized quilt, it will be the dimensions necessary for whatever bed I'm making it for with at least 10" or more over-hang. I have plans to make a queen size for my bed. It will be plenty wide & long to allow for draping on the sides & end of bed b/c it will be the "bedspread." I use fleece throws for my lap blankets when I watch TV, etc. JCY

Re: Question; Does size matter???
I just make baby and lap sizes, it's a fun size to make. If I ever make a queen it will be for my dd's. I don't need one, I have so many comforters and blankets.

Re: Question; Does size matter???
I don't usually make mine bed sized. They're mostly gifts and they turn out to be whatever size I choose at the time, usually between an lap and twin size. That being said, I have a few UFOs for myself that will be bed sized. Seems like the quilts for me tend to get pushed to the bottom of the list, hence the UFOs.

Re: Question; Does size matter???
Yeah I hear ya. But if you have 5 queen beds then I think you should make at least 5 queen quilts. I make most of mine for the PICU. and only on occasion to I make bed sized quilts. I do need to make one for my bed though (a queen), lol

Re: Question; Does size matter???
I make "surprise" sizes.....oh, that was supposed to be a twin, well it fits a queen size bed. One quilt was supposed to be a king size and got tired of making it so stopped at somewhere between a full and queen.
I like to have quilts that fit the beds and then some for watching TV or wherever else I need them.

Re: Question; Does size matter???
Since you have queen size beds and he thinks all your quilts should be bed size, I would suggest you tell him you need a drastic increase in your fabric allowance and will definitely need a much larger throat machine so you can quilt them yourself - or get a long-arm. Gammil has great reviews.

Re: Question; Does size matter???
Just my $.02...but I like to make the quilts big enough to cuddle up in or use as a nice throw or even put on a bed. So, for me, the size really depends on the size of the person I am making it for...a smallish lap throw is not going to work for a big person whereas something more like a full or double size range quilt will work for a lap throw or on the bed but not so big it swallows them up but the same size would swallow up a smaller person. So..my creations are not any "standard" size..they are more custom fit to the person they are meant for. (Wish I knew how to post pics of my quilt projects)

Re: Question; Does size matter???
I just finished updating my quilt log. I've made 23 quilts so far this year and only 5 were bed sized - one queen, two double and two twin. The rest have all been baby or lap sized. My favourite is lap sized between 48x58 and 60x60. Most of my quilts are for gifts or charity. I have 6 quilts left to make this year and they will all be 60x60 or smaller for the recipients to cuddle with.

Re: Question; Does size matter???
Most of the time my quilts end up being the size I can make with the fabric I have. I make baby quilts all different sizes and otherwise I make a lap or queen. I have made 2 king size for my bed because the first one shrank more than expected and it looks great on the queen. If you are wanting a very specific size you definitely need to allow for shrinkage from quilting and washing.

Re: Question; Does size matter???
My house is rather cold in the winter so all beds get duvet covers. With my small sewing machine, I've only been able to quilt baby and lap sizes. (The largest, I just posted in my album, is 56"x80"). These are also the sizes that the recipients would also make the best use of, as they don't need to mach the home decor. They are just comfy quilts for watching TV or knitting in the family room.

That is my plan, buy some fabric I like and make it into a quilt. They usually end up the size that takes all the fabric.
I have made 3 for my king bed, they get swapped with the seasons and the same with lap throws, they change with the seasons or my mood at the time.
I also make smaller ones for Project Linus and my grandkids.

Re: Question; Does size matter???
lately I've made a few 55" x 45" lap quilts for people. I think that's the perfect size for covering ones lap while reading or watching tv or something.
I've also made some larger lap quilts (70" square or something) and I think those sizes work well on queen beds, tri-folded at the foot of the bed.

Re: Question; Does size matter???
It depends upon who or what I am making them for. I enjoy doing everything from doll size quilts on up. I have never done a king size. Our bed is a full size bed but it is so tall, the quilt will be custom done between a queen and a king. I have done lots of throw size as it is a good size to do as gifts, gives a nice sample of the pattern, and doesn't take forever to make.
I have seen people put a white sheet on top of a bed then put the quilt down if the quilt did not fit the bed and they wanted to display it.

Re: Question; Does size matter???
I mostly make lisp sized wuilts.....great for relaxing with....and baby quilts.... I have absolutely no desire...at all...to make anything like a queen sized quilt... I am under five feet tall, have small hands, so I really don't like handling large quiltd.
-
Re: Question; Does size matter???
I lean towards a tad larger lap size. I too like to wrap up in something while watching TV, during a nap, and won't most likely make anything bigger than a twin size. It's easy in the winter to throw that over the top of blankets for that "weight" comfort and extra warmth. Besides, I have no desire to make a queen sized on for our bed............I wouldn't be able to tussle it around on the machine! Baby quilts are another fave, and table runners, mug rugs. First non-cuddle goody I made was the chicken pin cushion..........several friends will have them and table runners in their Christmas stockings this year.

He did get me a new PFAFF with a 10 inch that space for my birthday, love it, so far in all of my 38 quilts I have only sent 1 out to a LA quilter, I have been telling him my own along arm would be nice!!

Re: Question; Does size matter???
I like a variety of sizes, including ones you can hang on the walls! ;)

Re: Question; Does size matter???
Most of mine have been twin size and up. Lap is nice to cuddle not to mention cheaper to have LA quilted.

Re: Question; Does size matter???
Well, I have 4 Queen sized beds and a King sized bed IN my house, and all of the males in my household (4) are all 6'5" tall, so, naturally, I tend to lean towards larger sized quilts. I have made a few lap and baby quilts to give away, as I am not quite to the grandma stage yet, (could be if my kids would get married and get on with life, but I do still enjoy having them here). But I was making huge, Double layer, fleece blankets for my kids to snuggle up in, and to add warmth as an extra layer on their beds, long before I recently began quilting. So they are used to grabbing a fav. fleece blanket to cuddle up in for movies and ball games. My quilts are specifically for beds at this stage of my quilting journey. At some point, all of my familie's beds will be neatly dressed in a handmade quilt, then I can think of other fun things to make, maybe for grandbabies by then.

Re: Question; Does size matter???
I am definitely queen size . Right now I am making a baby quilt but much larger than crib size , the reason is they will have a quilt they can use longer.
-
Re: Question; Does size matter???
There are bed quilts and people quilts, all necessary. A crib quilt for a baby is fine, I also like to make them so the WOF is wide enough for backing, but a baby grows up and you need to make a larger size quilt for them. Teens like lap quilts about 60 x 70 for wrapping themselves in on the couch, bed and also when sleeping over a friends. The 60 X 70 is also great for adults to snuggle with. Queen size takes a longer time and more fabric (and dollars) and I make them for special gifts. Right now working on a queen as an engagement gift for one of our DGD's and her finacee. This one I send out to be quilted as I can't handle quilting it myself.

Re: Question; Does size matter???
Well, I have a t-shirt that says, "Size matters!" It's from a fishing derby. : ) I opened this to read the wise cracks, but I guess I'm the only one who thought it was a question that would bring them on. Clean group. : )
As to quilt sizes, I've made all sizes...queen, baby, wall, etc. My favorites to make are lap sizes (or baby). The lap ones are a great size to give as gifts and I tend to make quicker types that can be used. I'm another who loves to snuggle up.

Re: Question; Does size matter???
Haha....silly hubby. I make mine all kind of sizes. 4 I made for my queen size bed, the rest lap, couch and the giveaways. I made my hubby one....after taking it out of the dryer and tossing it directly on him as he lay prone on the couch, he was totally in love with the warmth it gave out. It was a couch size. Never heard another complaint out of him. :)

Re: Question; Does size matter???
I mostly make baby quilts, I'm in that grandmother stage of life. I like TV quilts too. I've made bed quilts but they are so big to quilt.
-
Re: Question; Does size matter???
I have yet to make a quilt to a specific size. Yes, based on math and reason, the quilt SHOULD end with X by Y dimensions but somehow that never works out. When someone asks me how big a quilt will be I answer: "I'll let you know when it is done." My favorite size is 60-ish by 75-ish. Perfect to cuddle under....and have room for the cat.
-
Re: Question; Does size matter???
I make mostly throws (around 60x70) and baby quilts because I give a lot of them as gifts. It's not horribly expensive and it gives the recipient a functional gift that I have put a lot of love into. I have made a couple of twin sized and have made one queen sized quilt for my bed, but didn't quilt it myself. I may make another queen sized and try to quilt it myself on my domestic machine.
I think it's great that your husband would like to see your quilts on all the beds. :)
-
Re: Question; Does size matter???
If you like to make them in the 70" square range they will work nice as a topper over a solid colored (cream/white) coverlet. You can then easily switch them out and still use them for a lap quilt. Occasionally I like to use that size on my table as well.
-
Re: Question; Does size matter???
I would like to make more bed-sized quilts but I don't have a long-arm or sit-down machine to quilt them. I'm too cheap to send them out for professional quilting. I'm working on a quilt right now that would fit a twin and I'm worrying about quilting it. Lap down to wall hanging is what I make most of the time. Tell your husband if he buys you a long-arm or lets you send them out to a professional long-armer you'll be happy to make quilts for all the beds.

Re: Question; Does size matter???
If asked two years ago or longer I would have agreed with Hubby. Now with so many beautiful throw size, baby size and every thing in between twin to king I would go with throw size. They are quick and even if design is intricate you don't start to feel like will this quilt ever end. I only make larger sizes when asked to by request. I don't take to many request, LOL.
