Yeah I hear ya. But if you have 5 queen beds then I think you should make at least 5 queen quilts. I make most of mine for the PICU. and only on occasion to I make bed sized quilts. I do need to make one for my bed though (a queen), lol

I make "surprise" sizes.....oh, that was supposed to be a twin, well it fits a queen size bed. One quilt was supposed to be a king size and got tired of making it so stopped at somewhere between a full and queen.
I like to have quilts that fit the beds and then some for watching TV or wherever else I need them.

I work to support a sewing habit that I don't have time for, because I work!
Since you have queen size beds and he thinks all your quilts should be bed size, I would suggest you tell him you need a drastic increase in your fabric allowance and will definitely need a much larger throat machine so you can quilt them yourself - or get a long-arm. Gammil has great reviews.
Be warned. I am BORED.
This could be dangerous.
When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
They are usually 90 degrees.
A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??
Just my $.02...but I like to make the quilts big enough to cuddle up in or use as a nice throw or even put on a bed. So, for me, the size really depends on the size of the person I am making it for...a smallish lap throw is not going to work for a big person whereas something more like a full or double size range quilt will work for a lap throw or on the bed but not so big it swallows them up but the same size would swallow up a smaller person. So..my creations are not any "standard" size..they are more custom fit to the person they are meant for. (Wish I knew how to post pics of my quilt projects)
I just finished updating my quilt log. I've made 23 quilts so far this year and only 5 were bed sized - one queen, two double and two twin. The rest have all been baby or lap sized. My favourite is lap sized between 48x58 and 60x60. Most of my quilts are for gifts or charity. I have 6 quilts left to make this year and they will all be 60x60 or smaller for the recipients to cuddle with.

Most of the time my quilts end up being the size I can make with the fabric I have. I make baby quilts all different sizes and otherwise I make a lap or queen. I have made 2 king size for my bed because the first one shrank more than expected and it looks great on the queen. If you are wanting a very specific size you definitely need to allow for shrinkage from quilting and washing.

My house is rather cold in the winter so all beds get duvet covers. With my small sewing machine, I've only been able to quilt baby and lap sizes. (The largest, I just posted in my album, is 56"x80"). These are also the sizes that the recipients would also make the best use of, as they don't need to mach the home decor. They are just comfy quilts for watching TV or knitting in the family room.
That is my plan, buy some fabric I like and make it into a quilt. They usually end up the size that takes all the fabric.
I have made 3 for my king bed, they get swapped with the seasons and the same with lap throws, they change with the seasons or my mood at the time.
I also make smaller ones for Project Linus and my grandkids.
lately I've made a few 55" x 45" lap quilts for people. I think that's the perfect size for covering ones lap while reading or watching tv or something.
I've also made some larger lap quilts (70" square or something) and I think those sizes work well on queen beds, tri-folded at the foot of the bed.
"Only God is perfect, my quilts don't have to be!"
It depends upon who or what I am making them for. I enjoy doing everything from doll size quilts on up. I have never done a king size. Our bed is a full size bed but it is so tall, the quilt will be custom done between a queen and a king. I have done lots of throw size as it is a good size to do as gifts, gives a nice sample of the pattern, and doesn't take forever to make.
I have seen people put a white sheet on top of a bed then put the quilt down if the quilt did not fit the bed and they wanted to display it.
