I'm an Aurifil convert!
I know I have brought up Aurifil in a couple of threads lately but I just have to do it again. I just finished quilt #3 with the same large spool of thread! Quilts were not huge, one 48x57, one 60x60 and today's is 50x50. All three quilts were pieced AND quilted with this spool, with all over FMQ on the 50x50. I really am impressed and will be spending a few dollars tomorrow at my local quilt shop's customer appreciation sale on thread! :)
Here's a pic of what is left on my spool

It seems like it! Lol. Pic is there now ;)

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
I have a lot of thread from Connecting Threads and am using it for piecing. I bought some Aurifil to try and I love it so that is what I'm using for my quilting now.

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
I love the Aurifil too!!! So very worth it, and actually, it's cheaper in the long run. I tried the Connecting Threads but found it to be quite linty. If you are amazed with the Aurifil, try Superiors Bottomline in your bobbin.....it holds about 3x more than normal thread.

Yes the CT thread is linty and breaks easily. I took my machine to have it repaired and took the thread I use (CT), the lady barely pulled on the thread and it snapped.....it was not an old spool either so I've been seriously considering not using it at all, but I have so much that I don't have a clue what I would do with it. I will have to give Bottomline line a try.

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
Pat, I will see if they have it at my LQS tomorrow. It's a 25% off sale, so I'm going to get some white and gray Aurifil for sure. I'm still not so confident with my fmq that I have to have my thread stand out a lot. I know I will be able to use gray for two of the gifts on my Christmas project list for sure.

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
I was at a quilt shop and looking at the Aurifil thread and the lady told me there is one that blends with every color except white. It has kind of a greenish tint and I bought some and have used it and it does blend well.

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
I, too, love Aurifil for quilting - it leaves such a gorgeous trail of stitches - love it, love it, love it.

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
I will look Shirley! The cream one I've been using has worked well with all of my last three quilts. I will post a pic of the mot recent one tomorrow after I finish binding tonight.

I used that Aurifil thread that blends in this quilt, because there were so many colors:

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
That is awesome!! Love that!!

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
I really like Aurifil. I use the cotton Aurifil Mako. It has much less lint than other cotton threads that I've used.

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
What is the name / " of the aurifil color that blends so well?
-
Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
I don't know the name of the color, but I thought it looked kind of light gray.

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
I'm just getting started but I too am in love with Aurifil. A friend gave me a spool to try & it's wonderful.
I have a question for those of you with more experience with it. It said online that you can't put this thread in the dryer. Why would that be? Is that true of all quilting thread?
-
Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
I'm not sure what that's about. I've put all my quilts in the dryer.
-
Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
I have never heard that....I put mine in the dryer!

I don't know the name...I think I'll call the shop where I bought it and try to find out.

I tried to call the shop a little while ago but didn't get an answer so I will try again in a few minutes.

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
Aurifil is just the best. I love how it just blends into the fabric. Once I tried it, I was converted. It has made a huge difference in my piecing. In the past I just bought whatever, not realizing the difference the size of thread can make. I don't use it for quilting because it is so expensive. I use CT instead. Whenever I pull it out (CT), I am amazed at how thick it is in comparison.
Plus Edyta Sitar uses Aurifil, and according to me, that woman can do no wrong.:D

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
I love aurafil thread, but I was noticing some breakage with the orange spools, I have switched to green, I think it's a teeny bit heavier. still great thread. Ask about that at your LQS??? maybe it's just me??. :icon_neutral: and I throw mine in the dryer all the time, with no problem.

This is what I use for most of my quilts, sort of an olivey-green. Besides Aurifil, I also love Superior Threads.

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
Denis suggested Aurifil to me when I first started here in the forum(ty Denis!). And I do LOVE it. I have tried other threads and always go back to Aurifil.
If you like to wind your own bobbins, this is a pretty good price:
Tristan Italian Threads *::*Aurifil Threads*::*Aurifil cotton bobbin in 80wt 17,000M black
I now have enough black bobbin thread for years and years.

Are you able to get the thread number from the spool and post it? I use Aurifil, and I am interested in checking out this particular color. Thanks!

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
The best place I have found to buy from for the large cones is pumpkin vine corner, they are $38. This cone is about 4.5 times as much thread as the large spool which you can get for around $10. The large spool is about 6.5 times the size of the small spool. I would not buy this size for a quilt. I buy the cone for neutral colors and the large spool for specific colors.
I was going to order a cone of this color that was recommended but I checked my stock first and found I have a large spool so I will have to try it.

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
I ordered the large spools from Red Rock thread. I was going to get it at Hawthorne but they didn't have the number of spools I wanted. It's $1 more a spool at Red Rock.

I will have to keep track of the name of this shop.....looks like a nice price on the thread and other items.

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
Fabric.com has a great price on Aurifil, especially if you order enough for free shipping.

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
I got lucky a summer ago. One of the shops here, for the entire month of August, had a sale on it. Buy three, get one free, and they were marked $9!!! What a steal!

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
Shirley, I like that color. I think it may be this one listed at Red Rock: Light Grey/Green #2843
I also need a color that I can use over multi-colored tops and that's a nice color.

The one I used was #5021. The #2843 has more green in it.

Re: I'm an Aurifil convert!
someone mentioned Bottomline from Superior. I really like it as well, but for the cotton snobs ( no offense! :) ) it is a poly thread and lasts a long time in the bobbin. I believe it is a 60 wt. thread so it's even finer than aurifil 50wt.
I wish M* would carry Aurifil!

Sandy where do you order it from? I went to a quilt meeting last night at our LQS and they don't carry it.

I'm not Sandy...but I just ordered from Red Rock threads. Hawthorne has it, as well.
