Ok... I need opinions :-)
I'm going to tackle FMQ on my Yellow Brick Road quilt! :D. Now comes the hard part... Picking thread.
Option A
Attachment 86907
Light grey thread (shown on the purple border of the quilt)
Option B
Attachment 86908
A plum variegated thread (also shown on the border of the quilt)
Here's what the quilt looks like ...
Attachment 86909
Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly welcome!!
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
it really depends on how much you want your quilting to stand out. Personally, I like the first sample. I don't think that would take over if you do it on the whole quilt. Are you planning to use this pattern over the whole thing, or just the borders?
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
I think I like the light grey the best :) can't wait to see it when it's completed ;)
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
Ok, even though your border color reads brown in these pictures I know it isn't. That said, I like the second choice better as it isn't so stark against the fabric. I think the top one is a bit too light.
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
I agree with Karen. I like the variegated thread. You can still see the design but it won't be as obvious if it's not perfect. I think you're doing great, Jess. I haven't tried anything like this yet. I bought a couple of patterns so I guess I need to take the plunge. Good luck!
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
beautiful!!! my personal preference is choice B. Cant wait to see it done!!
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
My plan was to do the square butterflies in the 5.5" squares on the quilt, so kinda scattered all over. The rest of the quilting was going to be echo stitching on the main seams. The butterflies in a row were going to go around on the border :)
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
I think I like the variegated thread better........it just seems more "butterfly-ish" and seems to add some dimension to the FMQ!
The quilt is beautiful!
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
try doing a butterfly on some of your print fabric if you have any and see which you like. It will look entirely different on a print fabric.
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
I like the light grey. Beautiful quilt!
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
I love quilting w/variegated thread.....I don't know why, but I just do!
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
I like the variegated thread. I like the way the butterflies drift in and out of focus as the thread color changes against the background. Your FMQ skills are looking good.
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
I like "B" myself. The butterflies look great.
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
Gotta love variegated thread. I have plenty and will be using it. Cant wait to see your finished quilt. Awesome work.
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
I like the look of the variegated!
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
I like option two, the variegated!

I agree.... But it really depends on how much you want the quilting to stand out.... The second option looks soft and appealing to me..

I like the 2nd picture (the variegated thread). It shows up, but not too much. I know that this is a new quilting pattern for you and the variegated thread blends more and will help hide any imperfections in your stitching. It's going to be a lovely quilt. :)
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
Aaand another vote for variegated, for the reasons mentioned before me (softer look, blends better, hids imperfections, etc.).
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
variegated for sure. I use them whenever I can as I love how they look. I love color not really a gray person. I think the gray is way to drab for such a pretty quilt.
Re: Ok... I need opinions :-)
Thanks everyone!!!!
I started with the variegated to see how it looked in the patterned squares, and it looks great! You all are right... it hides the imperfections! I was going to take that thread back to JoAnns because the purple didn't match the quilt, but I'm so glad I didn't!!
Got two of the squares done last night and a third one marked and ready to go. Really hoping to get this quilt done by the end of the weekend :D Just found out this morning that Grandma is going back to PA on Saturday morning (a whole week and half earlier than originally planned), so it's not looking like I'll get this to her before she leaves. It's kinda good though, takes a bit of the pressure off and I can really take my time on this one.
Thank you all again for the suggestions and opinions!!! This is why I LOVE this board!! :D
