    Don't be discouraged!

I'm not a great quilter....I preferpiecing......and I always dreaded having to quilt.... But... I've discovered line quilting, and my machune has a cool wavy stitch..... I do lines of curves, too.....not FM..... None of these things are precise.... They are easy, allow for done creativity, but you really can't mess them up... Now I relax when it comes time to quilt my quilts....

I haven't tried to FM with my new machine yet.....

I too often wonder how people can afford to have all of their quilts longarmed..... I live n a very tight budget, so I save my money for fabrics and batting....

Our quilt group has a resident longarmer, who does beautiful work..... She quilted my husband's Cmfort quilt...o's I'd for by another member......at a large discount..... I'd probably mske more quilts if I could afford to have T. quilt them for me.

It is sure worth it to buy a machine with a bigger harp. My old machines harp was 4.5 inches. My new machine has over 11 inches. Doing a large quilt with it is a breeze compared to the other! Just a thought too for those not that proficient at FMQ, have you tried using your decorative stitches running through the squares or sashing? I did a baby quilt with cuddle fabric and quilted it almost entirely with the deocrative stitches on my machine using varigated thread.

I have a VERY small machine and can just about manage to FMQ (Just beginning so stippling only so far)/SITD a twin. I just quilted made a queen/king? 88"x88" in 2 halves then joined them quilt layer only right sides together quilt side. Turned over, trimmed excess batting and backing to overlap and hand stitched the seam down the middle. You can not even notice on the top. I agree the cost of quilting has surprised me, it is not just that jelly roll or couple of charm packs, the extras all add up. But I hope you can find like others suggested cheap sources, I think using sheets as backing a great idea, though imagine you should prewash first to check shrinkage/colour. Also I decided to make smaller projects, table runners and cushions add a great touch, and after all you only have so many beds in the house! ( I plan to upload pic of my large quilt later, I will add a pic of my machine- I bet my machine is much smaller than yours- I am in Japan-everything is smaller here!

I could not afford to have mine LA quilted, no matter what the price would be. I hand quilt all my quilts, would that be an option for you? It does take time and patience.
Blessed are the children of the piecemakers for they shall inherit the quilts!

Wow!! Never realized a quilter was so much. If that was how I had to do it I am afraid nothing would be quilted. My machine has a 10 inch harp and I can quilt anything on it. I do straight line, in the ditch and some FMQ using stencils. Its good enough for me and have had no complaints on gifts given.
I have to agree how do people send 5 or 6 a month to the LA and still do more?

I couldn't agree more. Maybe if I was still working I could justify the cost but since retirement I have had to learn to think twice about where my money is spent. I didn't start quilting until I retired so there was a lot of money spent upfront to get what I needed, okay, what I thought I needed to fuel my obsession. Until I make myself practice FMQ I will continue doing straight stitching and SITD. Everyone has been very pleased with what they have been given and that is good enough for me. I do hope one day to get M* to FMQ a quilt for me but that may never happen but I can always dream...

Whatever happened to hand quilting and an old-fashioned quilting bee? With the cost of an LA machine, I don't think those prices are high, but I don't have that kind of money. But I am currently planning a quilt that should finish to about 81 x 81, and I may add another row of design work to the top to make it longer. I will start now to save for the cost of having it quilted at a shop with a LA, but I am also considering having it hand quilted by my friends, and myself. I have a PVC frame, and there are also ideas on youtube for frames.

I've only had one quilt long-armed. It was a queen and cost me something like $125, I think. I didn't think that was expensive, considering its size. I was going to send her my next lap quilt, but then I did such a bad job piecing it, I was embarrassed to do so. I quilted it myself and found that while it was imperfect, it was OK for my own use. Since then, I've quilted several more lap size. I've decided that bed-size is just not going to be my focus, and when I do break down and do one - I'll splurge and have it quilted. But, in the meantime, I'll stick to lap and baby size and quilt 'em myself. Each one gets better and better. Before long, I expect to be doing fairly expert FMQ - but it's something that will definitely come with practice. You gotta kiss a lot of frogs!

When I learned how expensive LA quilting was, I chose to take the FMQ classes, get the right equipment, & quilt things myself. There was an initial outlay of money, but I feel it was cost effective. However, I don't quilt anything larger than a lap size. I might try a twin, now that I have a machine with a wider harp. Queen size definitely goes to the LAer. The "Freedom Star" quilt (see my albums) was a gift, & I wanted it done right, so I was willing to pay to have it done. With batting, thread & quilting, it cost $214. Now that there is so much free info. on the internet about quilting, one can learn to do so much. JCY
