Color of Walls for Sewing/Quilting Room
Does the color of your wall influence, the colors when picking out color for a quilt,.
What Color to paint........Need Help with Color of walls for sewing/quilting room........
Have two small rooms that face south,. one will be just for sewing and of course quilting,.
I have enough room to fit a small sewing cabinet, white, the bernina red chair,. a small portable ironing board, and a wrought iron bookcase,. which is black, its 9 deep x 36 wide,. height is ?, I plan to place my two thread racks above the bookcase, and a table ( gray/plastic) that will hold a old handi quilter quilt frame,.
I plan to install a design wall,. not sure if it will be 4x8 or 8x8,. which covers the whole wall,. it will be white,.....
Two standard size windows....one faces east and the other south,. which have the dark window frames as does the baseboard, and door, almost a mahogany color, and wood floors, (old farm house,. it turned 100 this year,. she sure shows her age,. )
The other room is the same, except one widow faces west,. I call it my supply room, as it has a small corner closet,. which I plan to store supplies,. this room will hold books on wall, the brackets are black, not sure on what color to make the shelves white or brown/black,. will have a white cutting table,. 36x72, and two white bookshelves/cubes, pushed back to back, so I can use the top for a work surface, planning stage,. fabric will be stored in plastic bins, which will be stored under the cutting table,. and a large ironing board,.
So what color do I paint, one that is light and playful,. thought of aqua or turq,. and a apple green or lime color,. But will those colors influence the colors when picking colors out for a quilt, do I need to stick to the lighter colors,. what,..........and I don't want to make the room cold or closed in,. esp as they are small rooms,. approx 9 x9.
Not sure if I was going to make a cornice covered in sewing room motif,. (Sew Now Sew Wow by Alexander Henry) with white shade or cover the window shade with the fabric,. the other fabric I was considering has a yellow background with colorful dress forms,. thought of yellow,. but thought it might be overwhelming, and the yellows I've looked at have been,. not right,.......but any suggestions in yellow for a small room,. would be great,. As well as a aqua or light turq and a spring green,. if it would be possible could you tell me the color # and mfg
The two rooms are separated by a small hallway,. but you can see each room,.
Any suggestions would be great. Thanks Jen in northern Wisc.
Re: Color of Walls for Sewing/Quilting Room
Hi Jen! I am no color expert by any means! But to me the color of the walls have to be pastel in order to make my room brighter! I have lights all over the room to keep it bright. As we age we need more light so at 64 I'm really needing the extra light which I do not get from my one window facing north! My sewing room is a pale sage green! My adjoining guest room where I lay out my fabric on the queen guest bed is pale yellow! I have more trouble seeing color in the guest room but I also have darker curtains in there for my company to be able to sleep later! So I think you have to begin with your natural light source and how you will supplement it and where the dark spots are in the room! My cutting table is on the opposite side of the room from the window so I have an ott light on my cutting table because I really need it. My sewing machine is near the window and I have another ott light over my shoulder too!!
Take pictures, different times of the day. On a sunny and cloudy day etc!
Hope this helps!
Re: Color of Walls for Sewing/Quilting Room
I've actually thought about this alot for my next sewing room. Currently my sewing room is a bright yellow. This is because it's in the basement with no windows. If I had a room with windows, as much as I hate to say it, I would probably pick a snow white. The color of my space would definitely influence the quilts I made.
I usually hate white walls, but this is a time when it might be warrented. I would also consider a very light dove grey.
Re: Color of Walls for Sewing/Quilting Room
My sewing room is about 9ft by 15ft with one small window facing north..so not much natural light. I have plenty of light fixtures tho with the natural light flourescent bulbs so it is perfect for me. I painted the room a light mint/seafoam sort of color and sponged a pale butter yellow on top. It reflects the light very nicely and doesn't seem to mess with colors while I'm working on a quilt or whatever project I have going. That color combination elicits a calm, serene, happy feeling in me :).

Re: Color of Walls for Sewing/Quilting Room
I just finished painting two east facing bedrooms with the same size windows. The color looks completely different from room to room(much darker). Why, because one has a tree outside the window and the other does not. In this case it does not matter, but if I was looking for light I would try a sample.
Re: Color of Walls for Sewing/Quilting Room
If I had a room to myself and walls to paint 2 would be aqua-teal and 2 would be some shade of purple . not a yellow person nor do I like neutral in my own space. neutral in the living room works not my sewing space. But I have neither space I call my own or walls that I can paint. So my peach and blue flowers on cream work well :)
Re: Color of Walls for Sewing/Quilting Room
Anytime there is a small space, white/off white/antique white, etc. works well. Most especially if there isn't a lot of natural light. The white should give you an 'open, airy feeling'. I let colorful baskets holding notions, and even baskets on the walls to add color as well as storage space. Having a bookcase full of books also gives nice color. And fabrics... well, we know how colorful they are! They will decorate your room beautifully! That is my suggestion... as that is what I do! I love the colors of my craft to shine on a neutral background; makes the space larger feeling also.

I'm in the midst of painting mine orange and green.
Re: Color of Walls for Sewing/Quilting Room
My sewing room is 16 x 20 with 3 windows, 2 west and 1 north facing. I have one overhead light and 2 desk lamps, one by sewing machine and the other on my cutting table (actually an architect's old drafting table). Tbe room is painted Benjamin Moore's Chelsea Gray and I love it. The color is both restful and neutral--perfect for design wall. I would not paint my sewing room a bright color, I thi k it would definitely affect the abty to see blocks on tbe design wall objectively. I would never use aqua bc I absolutely detest that color!!! But that is certainly your personal choice.
Re: Color of Walls for Sewing/Quilting Room
I painted my craft room a very light teal/aqua.
Very pretty and still calming.
Re: Color of Walls for Sewing/Quilting Room
My sewing room has always been a very pale lavender....very light..... I have two windows.....lots if light.
The light lavender (orchid?) is definitely not distracting....nor does it affect the colors of fabrics.
However! I'm thinking of redecorating that room, and have no idea what other color to use... I've been happy with the lavender.
