Default Americana quilt - it's just beginning

I was inspired by Meli's Americana quilt for her dad and Sonje, and want to make one for my husband. He agreed, although we don't "need" a quilt. We went shopping for fabric today (much like Meli's dad), and he had definite ideas on what he wants...he wanted just three fabrics for the top...

I've not sewn too much with red/maroons... Would you pre wash the fabric, or just wait till it's done and wash it then...with color catchers? I've never used color catchers before...do they really work? And the reds won't bleed?

    Thanks!

Love those colors! I did a red white and blue one for my husband. The colors were very bright and I bravely tried the color catchers after it was all done and it worked!

Pretty fabrics! Have you chosen a pattern?

I don't pre-wash my fabric usually, not even reds. Reds do tend to run more than most other colors though. I use color catchers all the time and find that they absolutely do work. I use them liberally with my finished quilts - usually between 3-6 depending on how colorful the quilt is or if I notice that the fabric really changes color a lot when I press it. I have a red solid in my stash that has a noticeable color change when it's heated and it also runs a LOT. With color catchers I've never had colors bleed on my quilts and ruin anything. If after the first wash if I see a lot of color on the color catchers (I pin them to a white tea towel) then I throw the quilt back in the wash with more color catchers to get another good round of possible bleed out. Most of my quilts are gifts so I am always wanting to make sure that the recipient will not have to worry about ruining the quilt when they wash it.

I love color catchers, and they do work! My very first quilt had red, and I washed it on cold but had a pink disaster when the washer stopped. It was 10:30 at night, but I was lucky and a forum member responeded to my frantic post. I left it sitting wet, went to Walmart, bought them and washed it again and it was perfect. I use them now on every quilt, no matter what color.

I have also used them on regular clothes and was surprised at how much dye was still coming off clothes that were far from new. Try a box and I think you will like them!
PS - I love your fabrics, they will make a beautiful quilt!

I'm sorry there are two pictures on there. Can't figure how to get the thumbnail off. But I love Terri's idea because I only have made quilts for gifts also. I'm going to incorporate that into my regiment. I also agree with Tam, they are great and I used them with a black and stark white quilt too and it worked out great.

I wash mine after the quilt's made, and use color catchers when done. Love the fabrics you've picked!

Yes, it was the pattern that inspired me to make this quilt - see Meli's thread for a picture: Sonja's Americana Quilt -- C'est Fini

I never pre wash...not even red. I wash the quilt when it's complete and use color catchers. If I have colors that I think are going to be a problem, I use a few of them. They work great and I have never had an issue with bleeding colors.

You could stick a corner of the red fabric in a glass with boiling water and see if it bleeds. If it does, I'd prewash, if it doesn't go with the colour catchers!
