Well not exactly solved..... I have often wondered how anyone could sew thru their finger, now I know, (ouch) but I don't really know since I'm still wondering how the heck I did that.

Been there, done that. Had to go to ER to remove the broken needle from my finger. Got the picture to prove it. Yep! I'm still trying to figure out how my finger got under the needle, too. Welcome to the elite club :) lol.

I haven't gotten my finger yet. I have sewn my FMQ glove to the quilt before, so I know I was close.
Now, something to make you feel a tiny bit better - I used to work for Levi Strauss. A couple of the most dangerous machines on the assembly line are the bar tack machine (32 tiny little stitches in about a 1/4" before it stops) and the buttonhole machine (a complete buttonhole in the waistband and then the buttonhole is machine punched with a steel blade before that machine stops.) I saw the results of someone bar-tacking their finger and had the presence of mind to reach up and unplug the buttonhole machine when a girl near me got her finger caught. The mechanics wanted to know how I moved so fast since she only ended up with about 6 stitches in her finger. I heard her scream when the first needle hole happened and did not want to hear that scream when the buttonhole was punched. She was lucky she worked near me, because I was probably the only one on the line at the time that was tall enough to unplug her machine.
I've come close.....thru a long fingernail, but :knock on wood: not the finger and I hope never the finger!! Lord knows the rotary cutter halfway thru was bad enough!

So sorry!! Why do they hurt so much for such a small needle? And no matter what you do you hit that spot over and over!!

I can remember my mother doing it several times when I was a kid.
Got to remember to tell myself to hold the fabric on the sides, not
in front of the needle. So sorry you got it, hope it heals fast.
