    Default Flannel, Fleece, Minky...aargh...

What is the difference between minky and fleece?

After much hunting, I was able to find wide flannel backing in two places - Fabric.com (very limited choices) and Nancy's Notions (only white and oatmeal)
Anyone knows where to find wide fleece backing?

Do not want to piece the backing

If all else fails, I am going to buy a fleece blanket and use that as a backing.

fleece usually comes in 60" wide. if you seam it and then "comb" the seam you will never see it

Try BackSide Fabrics - Your Best Source for Wide Quilt Backing Fabric | for wide flannel backing.

Fleece and Minky are both 100% polyester fibers, but to me, minky is stretchier. When I think of minky I associate it more with baby quilts than adult quilts. I think fleece and minky both come in 60" wide.

Which is better and why - flannel or fleece?

if you use fleece you do not need batting. Fleece is polyester and does not breath and is much warmer. Flannel is cotton, thinner than fleece, and requires batting. It is a personal choice. Both make great backings

The answer to that question is going to depend on who you ask.

My choice is flannel. I do not like synthetic fabrics at all. If you live in a place with little to no humidity (8% is considered high humidity here) then anything with polyester remains full of static electricity and you can see sparks shooting around as you move under the blanket at night. I find flannel to make a really warm quilt when I use it as backing and I don't have to worry about getting shocked when I turn over.

Aarggg....too bad I didn't know about this site this AM. I just settled for an all white backing because I couldn't find one I liked for the stars and stripes quilt I made. Oh, well. Thanks for the link. I'll use it in the future, Karen.
