In my bad English, eyelashes are sort of long loops on the backside. Then the stitching is not neat and perfect, but either the upper thread or the bobbin thread is making long loops. I hope you understand what I mean.
It could be a tension problem, thread problem, cleaning or an old needle.

These are three samplers I used to fractice FMQ. See the one in the middle, at the bottom? In the curves, the top thread was going tighter than the bobbin thread, so it pulled it and the result was these stitches that really look like eyelashes.
In my case, I decided to bind the samplers anyway as potholders for DH barbecue.

I have my share of eyelashes, and it is always a bit disappointing to turn over a project and see that what I thought was a job 'well done' will be needing a seem ripping session

The fabric is pretty, isn't it? Perfect for kitchen-related items. But my FMQ was very poor: so I got eyelashes in the loops' sampler (hands going too fast) and extremely tiny stitches in the bubble's sampler (hands going too slow). But you can only learn from practicing and making mistakes, don't you?. They were also sewn on my first and basic sewing machine, I had tension issues with. (That shows also in the binding).

That happens to me often. And I HATE it! I don't get why the top looks perfect, the machine makes no odd sounds and sew perfectly, yet the bottom is all messed up! I dont' get it! But...the solution is...completely re-thread the TOP thread. Stupid it sounds and I don't see why, but that works every time. I don't understand it, but as long as it works! I now even will "thread head" a bit longer to make sure the bottom thread is doing right before I sew an entire seam (or even worse FMQ an area!) only to find out half my spool of thread is on the bottom! Thing is... the top thread stitches are secure and you'd think it'd be easy to tear it out but it isn't. But just get your seam ripper and while watching a TV show one evening, pull it out. Not hard, just time comsuming and messy with all the threads but worth it. You won't notice it once out and can re do it just fine.

"nesting" is also a term used for this very annoying issue!

Eyelashes are when the thread o the back is very loose, and long. I have that problem occasionally, and have to remind myself not to do turns to fast. That is where they usually happen to me. Like I told one gal at the retreat, the biggest thing when FMQ is hands slower than needle. You just have to find that sweet spot that works for you. Oh yeah, I am not a fast as it can go FMQer either. More of a medium fast, lol.
