    Default Newbie Mistake

In the past I purchased a couple jelly rolls from JoAnn's to practice with and noticed that they were very uneven. I chalked that up to being inexpensive, on sale, etc. I ordered a jelly roll (Chloe Another Point of View) to make a quilt for my daughter. When I opened it I did check the size at the fold and all were 2-1/2 inches. Great - good to go. After I had stitched some pairs together and went to subcut I noticed that some were too small. I had a couple that hadn't been sewn yet and checked them. It appears that most of the strips were 2-1/4 at the selvages and 2-1/2 at the fold. Not a huge deal because I just cut them down to the smallest size and will add a little extra on the borders to make up the difference. Next time I will be sure the check the size in more than one spot. Just thought I would share.

LOL.. funny you should say that about Joannes. I don't think any of the fabric cutters there even know what a straight cut is -- nor where they ever instructed how to cut the many kinds of fabrics they sell.

Despite the stainless steel grove that they slide the scissors in (while forcing them to drag and push the against the fabric to cut it faster), the cut is still all crooked and jagged.

I've purchased plenty of fabric over the years from Joannes, but I will never buy one inch of quilters fabric there - ever. Notions and patterns only.

That brings me back to the matter of straight cuts. I just got my order from the MSQC which had my first order of matching yardage for the border and binding of a quilt - just a yard. Talk about a straight cut. I went in to show my daughter, and even she remarked how straight and accurate it was.

It's so nice when you get what you paid for... and more.

Love that website info - Thanks for sharing!!

Joann's - I bought several Jelly Rolls there this summer to make a new fun quilt -- Even after Starching the center's were off grain and "thin" - I wrote a bad review. Ooops But now I know Batiks are kind of known for this-- but the ones at Joann's are in a drawer, I can't Fix the curved centers and lost 4" from each roll.

Our J's finally hired back the Good older cut ladies, so it's back to them for special yardage but I adore Pre-Cuts so stick with reg. fabric your best bet, and just know like we all do now - Batiks will not be right so choose a pattern it won't matter so much

My LQS uses a rotary cutter, mat and ruler to cut yardage. It's so nice compared to Joann's.

What a great tip. Thanks. I will use that in the future. It was interesting that all the prints in the roll were off but the solids were straight. I would make the assumption that they stacked the print fabrics together and the solids together when they were cut. Somewhere there are a couple of strips that are 2-1/2 at the ends and 2-1/4 in the middle.

batiks are AWFUL to work with... usually very thin material, muslin, low thread count, etc. but every jelly roll I get from MSC is awewome. I dont particularly like the pinked material packs I get, but otherwise, happy

Actually, Joann's employees are trained how to cut/tear fabric. And we go through a LOT of scissors..... Perhaps they needed new scissors, because I have never pushed fabric while cutting..

Local quilt shops, Joann's, Missouri star and other companies can't control their precuts...those come from the manufacturer. Joann's simply orders jelly rolls, they don't cut them, so saying Joann's is at fault is ridiculous. And for the record, I received fabric that was cut with a rotary cutter and was still crooked and lost an inch and a half on one end and half an inch on the other when I squared it up, making my yard 34 inches instead of 36.
