    Default Why Civil War Quilts?

CW Quilts have a big following. they have their own designs and fabrics. I am considering doing one but I wanted to know why others quilt them? Is it the patterns, fabric, history? I don't have any quilting friends, so I kinda feel like I am missing the boat when it comes to these quilts.

For me, it's the fabric, and the history.... Barbara Brackman is my favorite source... Besides being a historian, she designs beautiful CW fabrics.

Actually, I always thought CW fabrics were too dark.... No fun.... I preferred brights....

However, I began collecting CW. fabrics for a particular quilt I wanted to hand piece.....and they grew on me... No one wad more surprised than I!

I still love my brights, and jewel tones, but I now have a real appreciation for the rich Civil War fabrics.

I'm infatuated by CW quilts and fabrics. I have a few books I've been reading on CW quilts. I think it's a combination of history and the beautiful fabrics.

Do the blocks have certain meanings?

When I was a little girl (many, many years ago) my mother had a large collection of quilts, coverlets, lace table cloths, etc, that were made by my great-great-grandmother, Mary Jemison, either just before or after the Civil War. I loved those quilts and would spend hours copying the patterns on paper. I thought they were the most wonderful of all our family antiques. Sadly, when I was 14, our house was destroyed by fire and everything was lost. Mother, Dad, and I were unharmed but we were left with nothing. I always remembered the quilts and can still picture them in my mind. My attraction to CW quilts comes from those memories. I'm really new to quilting but intend to try to duplicate some of those quilts when I have a bit more experience and expertise.

I started doing Civil War quilts when my son & I started doing living history events and re-inacting with an Irish group. I've always liked the earthtones better than brights.
