Re: Black Friday Sales by store
I will spend the rest of my life locked in a closet before I go out shopping on Black Friday! But thanks for posting this for the brave hearts.

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
LOVE Black Friday Shopping!! We start out late on Thanksgiving night and finish with breakfast early Friday morning. It's a family affair and I'm usually almost finished with my shopping that day!
-
Re: Black Friday Sales by store
You and me too. Extremely PO'ed about the stores that are starting on Thanksgiving. If people would just not go on Thanksgiving, maybe, just maybe, they would go back to early Friday mornings. Either way, I WILL NOT be going.

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
Nothing wrong with all those great buys on Black Friday! If you have the gumption to battle the hoards, go for it. Not for me though.LOL
I DO object to any Thanksgiving sales, whether they are Thanksgiving day or start at night. This is a holiday to appreciate family and friends, not hurry through dinner because mom, dad,or whoever has to go to work that night for the "thrill" of shoppers thinking they are getting a bargain. People will buy what they need, want, etc for themselves, others, anyway. I wish more retailers would be brave and buck the "trend" in favor of being more humane. Just a thought

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
I used to go Black Friday shopping when my daughter was home but haven't lately. I remember when the stores were closed on Sundays! I might take a gander at Joann's on Friday. We'll see if I feel up to fighting the traffic! Definitely no shopping on Thanksgiving for this girl!

The sad thing is, people will go...and fuel the retailers more....every penny they can get....
My company is being forced by the parent company to open on thanksgiving and now this year they are opening on Christmas. It's just plain wrong. My owner does not want to be open, but he will be in violation of his franchise agreement...so what does he do?
Sad deal that we have gotten in to...and because consumers go...they open...

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
You know, I signed one of those "keep Thanksgiving closed" petitions on Facebook a few weeks ago. But it seems I am breaking my own rule. I plan on going to Walgreens, Rite Aid and Kmart on Thanksgiving day - but those stores have traditionally been open on Thanksgiving. Then I'm stopping my shopping until late at night - I will enter the mall at 10pm with my nephews to get some deals, and then we have a standing date at Denny's - for us, that is tradition.
I don't agree with the corporate greed mentality of needing to open on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Even McDonalds is closed here for Christmas - so why do other stores need to be open? From an accounting standpoint, yes those two days could bring in money, which is great for the P&L. But staying closed could increase the intrinsic goodwill of a store - and I would rather see that happen. However, my brother in law works at Walmart, and he is very happy about how the store is treating workers this year, and his paycheck will show that - lots of extra pay.

I'm with y'all. I went shopping on Black Friday once about 15 yrs ago...never again. I prefer shopping online while wearing my PJs and drinking hot chocolate.

Thanks!! I appreciate it!

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
When I was a lot younger my cousin and I went shopping on Black Friday; a horrible expeience back then. People were pushing and shoving each other and actually fighting over things on some tables, you couldn't check out because lines were horribly long. We couldn't even hit a place for lunch until almost dinner time. Never did that again. I don't think things are quite as bad as they were then, but I have done much more online shopping in the past several years. I make a preliminary list for each person and put it in a little book form and go from there. I do much better when I don't have to "power shop" all in one day. I NEVER shop on Thanksgiving day and don't plan to start now.

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
Thanks for the info! I went Black Friday shopping for the first time last year, and will not go again! I will be going out with my daughters on Sat though, hopefully not AS bad??

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
Mary: I hear you, I know the Mall's make their stores open on holidays and Sundays or they are not allowed to be part of a Mall.
Your right, I don't see this ending unless a writing campaign the stores is overwhelming enough for them to reconsider. Retail is a difficult job no matter what position you hold. Let's hope one day it changes.

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
I wouldn't care if Blake Shelton was there start naked doing jumping jacks. I don't go to black Fridays.
I used to when I was younger. I would rather pay full price if I had too.

A few years, long ago in a land far away... my daughter and I used to brave the cold at 5 am to do the black Friday thing, when the boys were all young for the toys. We would get down on the floor on Thanksgiving day with the sales and get a plan. Then, she'd take her list and I'd take mine and out we would go at the crack of dawn to get those deals!
Haven't done that in years. But, Martin finds at least one thing he will brave the crowds for and talks me into going at some point during the day. (like a 250.00 camera for 99.00) Not at 5 am though. My kids all do it though. LOL.

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
I have gone out on Black Friday I think twice in the past 4 years. Both times to Joann's, grabbed a 40 yard roll of Warm & White and went straight to the checkout. Getting it for 60% or more off was the only reason I would go out.

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
Now this is funny...and I feel the same way, lol.

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
I have NEVER, even in my youthful single days, gone out for Black Friday. To me it's tantamount to spending hours in the MVA line, which is sometimes unavoidable. I have a hard enough time standing in line at the grocery store.

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
I've seen lots of posts debating the Thanksgiving store openings on Facebook this week. One thing I hadn't thought of was the fact that some younger employees are really happy for the opportunity to get hours in at holiday pay. I never really worked retail, and don't think I'd enjoy the madhouse, but I worked plenty of holidays happily. The patients I worked with needed care 24/7/365, and my father was a policeman who also had to work holidays.
I understand tradition, but many people don't have the option of taking those days off anyway. I'm not going to begrudge people the chance to make a little extra scratch for tradition. I can only hope that there are enough people volunteering to work so that those who don't feel the same way can stay home with family.
eta: I have never shopped Black Friday, but I thank Amy for putting this post together.

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
Well in my case...this holiday weekend is a booger...everyone coming in to town to see their family and traveling on Wednesday makes my restaurant very busy...everyone already shopping like crazy on Friday and they don't want leftovers...makes my restaurant very busy..I put on additional staff to handle the influx and it carries all the way thru til Sunday evening. I pretty much think everyone can live without a steakburger and a shake on thanksgiving....

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
I love a bargain and an enabler. Amy you are both. Good job!

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
If I do any Black Friday sales, it will be at Missouri Star Quilt Company.

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
If I didn't have to work it, I would not be out. I hate how angry people get and the yelling and pushing, shoving and grabbing of things. Its bad enough I have to witness this and see the nastiness. I will never ever shop on black friday...except online.

I guess I have to admit that I'm getting old! I had to look up who this is! Now, if Sean Connery or Burt Reynolds was there - it might be incentive enough for me to go!
I have only been shopping once on Black Friday - never again. Cyber Monday is more my style!

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
Not planning any shopping black friday, just staying home and enjoying family visitors. I suspect we will bake and eat and play:)

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
Two years ago I went to Joann's on Black Friday and I'll never do it again. Lines after lines of people waiting to get fabric cut and very few cashiers to check people out...way understaffed. If I'd stayed long enough to get waited on I'd have spent the whole day there...not worth it to me. We always go Black Friday shopping but Joann's is one I won't be wasting any time on. Genny

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
Amy -- I want to thank you for the heads up on the Black Friday bargains. I never shop at Joann's, in part because I avoid chain stores when I can, in part because there's not one nearby. But our family drove to St. Louis today to shop and we stopped at Joann's and I got several bargains -- 11 yards of fabric (ranging from $1.74 to $3.99 a yard), an Oslio iron, the buy-one-get-one-free Ott light combo, and a collection of 26 spools of thread.
I never would have know about these deals without your post and I'm grateful.

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
My daughter said a lady got kicked out of Big Lots (of all places) yesterday.....over a $5 savings on something.
Last night DH & I went to JoAnn's and picked up an Ott Lite for his shop. I believe it was the one they actually have on sale today but they gave us the sale price.
-
Re: Black Friday Sales by store
I'm glad my list was helpful to others! I was in line at 5:45, probably 7th in line out of 20, and got all I was after. I got 10 spools of thread, a batting, 24x36 cutting mat, a tote for all my quilt supplies to take to classes, new scissors, and 21.5 yards of fabric. I spent $116 and saved $221. I think I underpurchased on Thread and Batting though, and am thinking of going back now to get more.

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
Joanne needs to limit quantities. Around here one or two people will buy up everything and then resell it at a slightly higher price on Ebay.
Went to Hancock for some iron on fleece I needed for a project. The junk that was on sale. Most people had carts full of fleece (I hate the stuff) and I mean 10+ bolts. Wasn't a wasted day, though. Sold a dress form I no longer needed. Lady got a bargain, and I got rid of a space-taker-upper.
Didn't need the scissors special. I have a whole load of scissors I bought for family use years ago. All have different colored handles. Bought a Fiskars sharpener, and those scissors are still going. I use the Fiskars squeeze type scissors. The handles on the others keep slipping up my fingers.
