Re: Black Friday Sales by store
When I was a lot younger my cousin and I went shopping on Black Friday; a horrible expeience back then. People were pushing and shoving each other and actually fighting over things on some tables, you couldn't check out because lines were horribly long. We couldn't even hit a place for lunch until almost dinner time. Never did that again. I don't think things are quite as bad as they were then, but I have done much more online shopping in the past several years. I make a preliminary list for each person and put it in a little book form and go from there. I do much better when I don't have to "power shop" all in one day. I NEVER shop on Thanksgiving day and don't plan to start now.
Re: Black Friday Sales by store
Thanks for the info! I went Black Friday shopping for the first time last year, and will not go again! I will be going out with my daughters on Sat though, hopefully not AS bad??

Mary: I hear you, I know the Mall's make their stores open on holidays and Sundays or they are not allowed to be part of a Mall.
Your right, I don't see this ending unless a writing campaign the stores is overwhelming enough for them to reconsider. Retail is a difficult job no matter what position you hold. Let's hope one day it changes.

I wouldn't care if Blake Shelton was there start naked doing jumping jacks. I don't go to black Fridays.
I used to when I was younger. I would rather pay full price if I had too.

A few years, long ago in a land far away... my daughter and I used to brave the cold at 5 am to do the black Friday thing, when the boys were all young for the toys. We would get down on the floor on Thanksgiving day with the sales and get a plan. Then, she'd take her list and I'd take mine and out we would go at the crack of dawn to get those deals!
Haven't done that in years. But, Martin finds at least one thing he will brave the crowds for and talks me into going at some point during the day. (like a 250.00 camera for 99.00) Not at 5 am though. My kids all do it though. LOL.
Re: Black Friday Sales by store
I have gone out on Black Friday I think twice in the past 4 years. Both times to Joann's, grabbed a 40 yard roll of Warm & White and went straight to the checkout. Getting it for 60% or more off was the only reason I would go out.

Now this is funny...and I feel the same way, lol.

Re: Black Friday Sales by store
I have NEVER, even in my youthful single days, gone out for Black Friday. To me it's tantamount to spending hours in the MVA line, which is sometimes unavoidable. I have a hard enough time standing in line at the grocery store.
Re: Black Friday Sales by store
I've seen lots of posts debating the Thanksgiving store openings on Facebook this week. One thing I hadn't thought of was the fact that some younger employees are really happy for the opportunity to get hours in at holiday pay. I never really worked retail, and don't think I'd enjoy the madhouse, but I worked plenty of holidays happily. The patients I worked with needed care 24/7/365, and my father was a policeman who also had to work holidays.
I understand tradition, but many people don't have the option of taking those days off anyway. I'm not going to begrudge people the chance to make a little extra scratch for tradition. I can only hope that there are enough people volunteering to work so that those who don't feel the same way can stay home with family.
eta: I have never shopped Black Friday, but I thank Amy for putting this post together.

Well in my case...this holiday weekend is a booger...everyone coming in to town to see their family and traveling on Wednesday makes my restaurant very busy...everyone already shopping like crazy on Friday and they don't want leftovers...makes my restaurant very busy..I put on additional staff to handle the influx and it carries all the way thru til Sunday evening. I pretty much think everyone can live without a steakburger and a shake on thanksgiving....
