What about using insulating boards to make a flat even surface with the sewing machine, that you could eventually remove? I don't know who had posted this video earlier on the forum:

What a great find.
Sorry you are sick and the medicine is much more important than the table for now.
I got a great countertop free that my machine is sitting on and want to put a hole in it but I am too bad about moving things around to commit to where to put the hole so mine is sitting on top and I guess I can live with that for a long time.
You got a great bargain! I'd also wait to see which configuration works best for you before deciding to cut. If you decide to do this, maybe you can get a plexiglass surround for the machine and use the piece that's cut out as an insert to go back into the desktop if needed.
Yep.., we knew who you were ousting to.
I like Holly's idea... I have a small acrylic extension for my Janome, and I love it.... I can sew n any sturdy surface..
I would definitely give this some time..... I kind of feel like you don't really want to cut into that beautiful wood... So, take your time....try different layouts, see how that desk would really function in your space. Just in quilting, once you cut, you 're done.
I have to say...you did really well on this table! Genny
I agree as well about waiting to cut a hole in the top. I think you should use it for awhile as is before making such a big change. Just my two cents.
What a beautiful bargain, my friend!
I'm not sure if I could cut into though.....
