Fifty Shades of Gray... and yet not the right one yet!
Hello! I've just completed my 2nd quilt top made from Moda's Comma Chic fabric. Really, it's a carbon copy of this: A Modern Wedding Quilt - Cutting, Piecing, and Quilting Instructions For YOU! - Emmaline Bags: Sewing Patterns and Purse Supplies. It's to be a Christmas gift for my daughter-in-law - she chose the pattern and the fabric and all has gone perfectly fine EXCEPT the backing fabric. She nor I cared for the fabric chosen and shown on the blog and thought it would be no great task to find something that would work.
Thus - my inexperience with the world of quilting appeared in a grand way! Who knew there were so many shades of gray?? I only have 3 fabric stores nearby in which to shop. I thought surely one of them would have something, nothing, absolutely nothing coordinated with it.
One shop did have what the clerk called Moda's "modern" gray, but a full panel of solid gray makes it look prison-like - just dull and uninteresting. My d-i-l is far from that; the modern geometric design of the quilt pattern and fabrics is what drew her to it. I was looking for some sort of print or design, but... well, I'm frustrated.
My question is: Is there a universal color chart or something that would make it safe for me to order the 3.5 yds needed to use for the backing? Or, does anyone have any ideas or hints that might help me here?
Thanks for any help or suggestions. I hereby promise to never take this sort of thing for granted again, lol!

Thousandsofbolts.com sells a moda solid color chart. I have one and it is wonderful for finding the right solid to go with a pre-cut. I don't have any of the Comma Chic fabric so without that I don't think I would be able to help. I can tell you that if you get the chart for yourself (I think every quilter should have one) that it will really help you and likely arrive before next weekend. The shipping is included in the cost.
Thousands of Bolts ... only one nut!: Moda LARGE Bella Solids Swatch Chart quilters cotton fabric at near wholesale cost.
They are my number 2 favorite store after M*.

It would be more pricey than a solid, but you could use a print from the Comma line.

Thank you everyone. I'll most probably go with one from the same line. It will just make it so much easier. My thinking I could just find something that worked shows my inexperience in quilting.
And, Lorie, you're right. That diagram made putting the quilt together so much easier! It encourages me, along with this quilting board, to keep going. I am LOVING quilting!!

I am making a periwinkle quilt using that same Comma line! It is so cool.
Thousands of Bolts is a great place to find fabric. I use the wishlist a lot because you can then view all your choices side by side. I'm in the process of searching for a good purple color to match a t-shirt quilt I'm making
