My friend and I went to the store last night and bought the fabric needed to make two queen sized quilt tops. Once the tops are done, we'll go back for batting and backing. The blocks themselves are very simple. 6 1/2" centers with 3 1/2" borders, creating a 12 1/2" block (will finish at 12"). There will be a 1" black sashing between the blocks. The two quilts will be identical as far as construction, but will look vastly different because of the fabrics used. One has a dark gray-blue with a geometric pattern in tone on tone. This will be bordered by a deep, mottled red. The other is a blue and green batik bordered by a bright blue. The red/grey looks very structured and sophisticated and decidedly masculine. The blue/batik looks more casual and laid back and flighty. They will suit their future owners perfectly!

We got home and I threw together one block for each. My friend sat and watched, entranced, and asked what she can do to help these quilts go together more quickly. She also wants to learn to quilt. We've arranged for her to come over on Tuesdays. Whatever stage I'm at, she'll get to help. I'll have her sewing blocks together, layering, and FMQing before we're done.
