    Default Thread comparison chart

My quilter friend who is teaching me only uses Aurifil thread but when I saw the cost, well, with me being a beginner and on a budget, I cringed a bit. Was researching online and found this very interesting comparison chart.
Coats & Clark thread vs quilting thread

I'll have to order the Aurifil if I decide to go that route, but it looks like it may be worth it from all the positives I've read here on the forum.

I wouldn't quilt or piece without it. The amount is much more than a normal spool and it's wonderful for piecing. It also leaves less mess in my machine...just my opinion!!

I love it for piecing....both hand and machine..... Seams are less bulky...

Just so you know, dogs live it, too. One of our two Chihuahuas chewed up both of my treasured spools of Aurifil thread.. It was my husband's dog. He chews up everything.,,,... Mine would never do such a thing.,,..

Thanks for the chart Bunny. I think I'm going online to look for the Aurifil. It really isn't that much more expensive when you consider that the spool is 1400 yards compared to 400 for the Coats and Clark and 273 for the Guttermans. And I like that it might leave a little less mess in my machine

Thank you so much for this information. I noticed they didn't compare the Aurifil to Cone thread but probably many home-sewers don't buy this?

I do like to lay down the threads (for the top and the bobbin) and compare how wide they look and feel. May have to invest in some Aurifil it sounds more reasonable when broken down this way. Great info

When I tell you a spool lasts almost forever, it really does!! I usually go thru only one and part of a second of the white a year, and it took me that long to go thru a black one as well. And that was when I was making a lot of bags that were quilted inside and out. I always use Bottomline by Superior for my bobbin. It is even finer and just as strong as the Aurifil. I buy it at the Sew Expo's and other shows like that, normally three big spools for $20.

I love aurifil thread and if you are making a quilt that has a lot of matching of points or intersections, it is wonderful because it is a less bulky thread and will produce much more precise seams. But I also love Connecting Threads Essential thread. It is a great buy (and is often on sale) and comes in lots of gorgeous colors. My machine likes it too! So for me, I have two options that work very well for me and my machine. One a bit pricey, the other less so, but even the Aurifil is a pretty good buy for a premium thread.

I buy my Aurifil from this site: Aurifil Quilting Thread 50 Weight
It's the best price I have found for Aurifil thread so far, and they are great to work with!

I've recently jumped on board with aurafil thread, love the stuff and it does last forever, so the pricing really isn't over the top. I purchase mine from fabric.com.

Just found this sewing example on thread weight (and since it used various Aurafil thread weights), may add to this discussion.

I'm hooked now, off to shop. Wish Joann's carried it since it's coupon time!
