Purple fabric
Hi. I just picked out my fabric for the back of my jelly roll race quilt. It is a dark purple. I don't typically pre wash my fabric but the lady at the store said I should DEFINATELY pre wash this. Will this make the quilt look funny if the the backing is the only thing that is pre washed....but the lady also said purple is one of the worst colors for bleeding,,,,but that has me panicked as there is a lot of purple in the jelly roll and I can't obviously pre wash that..
Thanks

Wash the entire quilt after you are finished with it, using a few color catchers. I would wait and wash everything at once, without prewashing.

Noooooooo :-) I would not pre-wash. I used Color Catchers (but also have Shout ones)... have used many purples (batiks even) and NO bleeding - even from red/black and white quilts
Cold water wash gentle, and I even low tumble dry mine before gifting
Hmm here is a Purple Purple one I did -- Back deep purple front all tones of purple batik and No prewashing - Did it with 2 shout color grabbers and it went off to a lady in a California hospital - Looked amazing and no bleeding

Good luck

I agree, wait and wash after done and use the color catchers. I just finished the plaid scotty dog posted yesterday. Lots of red, so I threw in 3 color catchers and no problems.

Re: Purple fabric
I've never had any problem with colors bleeding and I've mostly used very bright colors.
The trick I use is to wash in cold on gentle adding a small amount laundry soap and 1/2 to 1 cup of white vinegar!!!
No bleeding trouble here!

I would go by what your store recommended and prewash the backing with white vinegar. Then wash the quilt once finished with color catchers. I finished a quilt this summer that had some black borders which should not have bled, but decided to use some color catchers (I used 3) and it still bled terribly and discolored the yellow in the quilt. I would much rather be safe than sorry. This is also a reminder to myself NOT to try and save a buck by buying Hancock's version of Kona.

the Kona Fabric at Hancock Fabrics IS REAL KONA FABRIC! There are no seconds, irregulars etc when it comes to the Kona fabric. Anything that doesn't pass Robert Kaufman's STRICT standards is destroyed and NEVER makes it to the retail world. A representative of Robert Kaufman actually commented on a thread here on the board that was questioning this. Do a search and read their rather lengthy response to become better informed.

I know Kona is Kona, always buy it from Joanns, but this was a lesser brand made to compete with Kona at Hancock's. Junk. Called Windsor or something along those lines.

I agree that purple is one of the colors most likely to run. Cut a little sample of your backing and soak it in some warm water and then lay it on some white paper towels and see what it does. If the bleeding is light then don't prewash the backing and be sure to throw in a few color catcher sheets when you wash your quilt after it is finished.
I once bought a backing (Timeless Treasures) that was dark burgundy paisley that ran so badly after I did the little test above, that I ended up not using it. Also, it's important not to leave your wet quilt in the washer for any period of time. If dyes have transferred to your color catcher sheets they can continue to transfer to other parts of your quilt if it is left wet in the washer.
