The next one came out fine! The third was for Zander who is 10, a self-binding receiving blanket would need to be 60" and 70" to cover him. lol

I ended up making an jumbo French seamed cuffed blanket for him. 44"x60" Top stitched the edges and stitched in the ditch where the cuff met the main body. Done. In his favorite red on one side/blue on the other.

Used Robert Kaufman flannel, love it, so soft, stitches up so nicely. Kat and the kids loved them. Tomorrow back to pillowcases.

I have gotten this "simple" project all messed up and I need help!! My corners do not lay flat!! They actually turn and look like it would be a PERFECT topper for a card table!! What did I do wrong?? Any ideas??

Welcome to the "pizza box" " dog bed" Club! I found for me the best way not to goof it up is to lay the blanket out wrong side up, and pin the corners to make it lay flat. You will have little triangles of fabric sticking up in the air. Sew along that line that you pinned and turn it and check that it is correct right sides out. Once you cut it wrong, there is no fixing it, just get new fabric and start over. It is not one little bit intuitive, as far as I can see!

I just made my first self binding blanket and must have gotten lucky, because mine seemed to turn out fine. How do you get the miters going the wrong way?

Those mitered corners are something I have to watch being done, otherwise, I'm likely to make the same mistake. If you print a picture of it you'll never make that mistake again. Here's a photo tutorial. If you scroll down to steps 5 and 6 you can print out just those photos or save to your computer. I prefer having a printed reference. Self Binding Receiving Blanket Tutorial - Sew Much Ado

Do you know how to isolate pages for printing? If not, I've discovered if I click on PDF in the print window I can click on "Open PDF in Preview." I scroll through the tutorial to see what will print on each page. I can then enter the exact pages I want to print without printing out the whole tutorial.

I keep so much stuff stored on my computer that I have a terrible time finding things. I keep a notebook of instructions. Having a hard copy that I can quickly refer to up in my sewing room is more convenient for me.
