Suggestions on a photo editing program, please
To make a LLLL OOO NNNNN GGGGGG story and week short..I got a new PC with Win 7 on it. I had XP. That part is fine, but I had MicroSoft Picture It 2001 as my photo editing and album software. It was great. 12 years old and still running perfect...until I tried to install it to Win 7. Of course...it is apparently to old to work on W7. Hoping I haven't lost all my pics that I copied to an external hard drive that had been corrilated and all in Picture IT....I apparently have to get a new program for my pictures. I use it alot, I copy from my digital camera to Picture It, edit and save to C: drive in .jpg format.
Any suggestions on a good photo editing program that is easy to use, saves the pics to the PC...either to buy or for free download?

I have Photoshop, but it is very expensive. I only got it because I thought I might sell some pics to calendar companies and I needed it to do some of the things they required. Anyway, a very similar, but FREE program, is GIMP. You can download it from the internet. My son is a computer geek (works as a software engineer for Motorola) and he introduced me to it. I used it until I got Photoshop. You might give it a try.

I use "Paint". It came free on my computer 3 years ago. Check your programs and see if you have it or not. It may be included in your word processing software package.

I also use Photoshop. It is expensive but I had to have it for something else. I've also heard GIMP is good and free.
Until you decide what you want to get, you might want to try out this online editor: Photo editor online - Pixlr.com edit image

I have Photoshop. Paint is located under Accessories in Win 7.

ohhh don't you hate it when our old programs don't make the transition from XP to Win7!!! My old PaintShop Pro with Animation shop was one of those too -- Guess I got my use out of it from the last 10 years. I like making animations and love using PSP for editing my photo's, so I'll buy it again. I do the same, remove them from camera, upload then open, edit or crop and save as .jpg or animations in .gif. What about the mfg of your fav program? Do they offer it in a more recent version that will work with Win 7?

I use Photoshop, but only because I got it at a really good price a couple of years ago. Before that I used Photoshop Elements and found it very user friendly. When I was using it and updating it it cost about 100 bucks....not sure if it's gone up or not. I think they are now on PSE 10 or 11.
My nephew told me about Gimp and he said it is every bit as good as Photoshop....haven't tried it myself so can't attest to that, but I thin it might be worth a try.

I use Corel Paintshop Pro. I have used it for a long time....15 or so years. I was using it before Corel purchased it, it was Jasc Paintshop Pro when I started.

I have PSP 7 on my computer....doesn't work real well. But I can open the animations in it and play them. Don't use those much anymore. I still use PSP 9 sometimes. For my photos I use Corel PSP x 3.

Thanks Shirley!! I bought mine when it was Jasc and didn't know they got bought out. That's what I have version 7! Didn't even try to load it, but I really like making cool animations and put a few on my blog of my favorites. Well rats guess I need the newer version to work right, thanks for the info
Re: Suggestions on a photo editing program, please
I also use Photoshop, but Adobe has a smaller program called Elements that you can find on sale at times. If you are not set in your ways, there is a good open source free program called the Gimp. It runs on Windows. I don't know what version of 7 you have, but from Pro up you can run virtual XP. I'm running Adobe Illustrator 8 on it as Adobe messed up the verification process for Illustrator CS2.

I have been useing Picture IT for 8 years and it was just the perfect program for me and what I do. I just tried windows Photo Gallery and what a night mare that one is!First it worked but it wasn't to friendly, then it started opening in a different window and there was no place to resize or save! Any tips on using Paint?

I looked at Gimp but my computers anti virus program Sophos... said it comes with search virus's and advised me not to download it. Not exactly sure what all that means as many have said they like it, but I can't afford to take to many chances at the moment!

Try IRFANVIEW - it's free so maybe worth a try until you decide what you need and how much you want to spend. Good luck
