I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
What is the matter with me? I know life has been busy and stressful but when I have a couple hours to work on a quilt I just sit! Sometimes I work on my hexis but that is getting way to close to being done. It is like I just can't make myself go sit at the machine. I have a quilt started, way back in July, but only have 2 blocks finished. Would someone like to bring the fire cracker and liter? Please? I need a great big push! Instead I sit.

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
Why not sit? You have a lot of obligations in your life. You are going through a lot right now. As much fun as it might be to get to sewing maybe what you need right now is to just sit. A little quiet time with as little going on in the brain as possible is actually good for you.

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
You'll get your mojo back. You need to (as my daughter would say) chillax. I don't know how you keep up with yourself as it is. Still keeping you and your family in my prayers.

I'm feeling the same way. Don't know what it is. Sluggish I guess. Looking at my big swap right now, so maybe after I can get it back together after I send it off.
We need to meditate in a quilt tent!

We have worked hard - so its ok to dowhatever we want at the moment. Your moment will come unexpectedly. Just take care of you cause you cannot care for someone else unless you are good to go

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
We all have seasons in our life. This time last year, I was depressed about my oldest child going to college and all I did was sit on the couch, watch tv, and eat buttered crackers. This year I am on fire, making new things every single week.
Be patient with yourself. It will come naturally.

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
Oh honey, you don't need a fire cracker - you need some quiet time with nothing to do - your body and brain are telling you to stop and smell the roses. Just sit there and maybe pet some fabric or flip through a magazine or do absolutely nothing at all. You need to recharge your batteries. You do such a good job taking care of everyone else, but you need to take some time for you too!

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
Don't stress about it. I am just getting back into it after a few months (well since about April), I just didn't feel like doing any sewing or quilting. I got back into it about a week or so ago and so far I've finished a quilt I had on my frame and am binding it now. I'm pinning a quilt for my great-niece. I made a lap quilt top and cut out the pieces for another quilt - just waiting on an order to finish cutting that one. So it will come back - be patient :)

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
Thanks you ladies. I guess even at 64 my moms teaching that is you are just sitting you are being lazy. HA! Guess I just needed to be given permission to not have to be on the go even at the machine all the time.
What crazy life this is.
I am going to meditate on that quilt tent though. LOL

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
Sandy, I agree with Lisa and the others. Why not sit & rest......you need some down time. When you don't feel like sewing spend some time relaxing and look through a quilting magazine. :). I'm sure you will feel like sewing after you've had some time to rest from the stress you have had.

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
I think we all, as creative individuals, go through - not slumps - quiet time. You need time to recharge and there's no point forcing it if you aren't in the mood - leads to mistakes, frustration, and blah. Take your break and you'll know when you're ready to get sewing again. And as for mothers and their guilt...I'm trying REALLY hard to shake that, even at 40-cough-7! We don't need that!

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
Sandy,
Hi! I wanted to share with you what I do to remedy this. I find that when I start a project, I am so into it at first... then as I get further along the romance seems to fizzle. So, in order to keep myself from sitting,,, and sitting,,, and then re-organizing my drawer,,, and then sitting some more.... when I really aught to be using the time to do some sewing,,,,,,,,,,,, I start a new project. I find something that gets me excited....and start doing it. At any given time I have at least 6 or 7 projects going so that when one is not so interesting anymore, I have others to go back and look at and remember why they made me excited in the first place.... I know most of us have more than one thing going on at a time. Next time when you feel this way, look at one of your books or go online and find a new exciting pattern and start on it. Just an idea. It helps me to keep it fresh... of course it takes longer to finish each project, or does it?

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
I am always saying that my get up and go has gone! Everyone needs some down time. That's one of the problems with society today...everyone is always on the go trying to accomplish a zillion things. We all need a little rest sometimes and maybe even get to enjoy some silence!!
I love that quilted meditation tent. Maybe Jenny can pitch a few of those behind the new retreat center!

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
Sandy, I can really relate. You need a firecracker....I think I need a stick of dynamite! While we were on vacation (Sept 18th thru 28th) I was a sewing "fool". I stayed at my machine, if DH & I weren't out doing something and when I got up early....I am a VERY early riser and I got A LOT done! Now that we are back home, I feel like I'm stuck in concrete. I have blocks that I need to finish piecing for Jenny's serendipity pattern. DH took me to a lovely quilt shop while in TN and for my b-day I was essentially given "free rein" for buying fabric. :D So I got LOTS of beautiful fabric that sits untouched. :(
I "think" part of my problem is that my "sewing room" is what used to be our catch all (junk) room. I have cleared out a lot of stuff, STILL waiting on DS #2 to come get a set of twin mattresses--he swears he wants, I'm giving him until the last weekend of this month. If he doesn't get them, they go to goodwill or salvation army!
There is a ginormous (if that's a word) treadmill in said room! We can't get rid of that...due to the amount we paid for it, the trouble it will be getting out of the room (it's HUGE!) and now DH has decided he wants to use it on a daily basis. The room can be rearranged, but I need help and those stupid mattresses need to go!
I've also had a b-day & an anniversary in the last 2 1/2 wks and on Thursday I'm having an outpatient procedure on my right sinuses and I'm not looking forward to that. So as you said, some events in my life have me distracted & side tracked, but I KNOW that sitting at my machine & sewing so helps me refocus & relax (as much as I can). Where's that dynamite?!?!? Thanks for letting me vent.
Terri

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
I wasn't quilting in 2008 when our "baby" (son #4--Brian) graduated from college....but talk about a meltdown. He graduated in May and was turning 21 in August that year....he already had a fantastic job lined up and I realized that my baby was all grown up. :( So what did I do??? I went out & bought a dog! Now I love my fur baby, but I was a mess at that point in time. I sat, watched TV, ate everything that didn't move and it took me a while to get "moving" again. Then my dear Dad passed Feb 16, 2010 and Brian was engaged to an absolutely wonderful girl.....I was so upset about losing my Dad and even the fact that he did not live to see his youngest grandchild get married---or even meet the new DIL. My mother's day & father's day that year, I was really depressed. Then when Brian & Liz married (just 7 months later), I felt like I was "losing" him too. :icon_sniff: It only took me a short time to realize I didn't lose him, I gained the wonderful daughter I never had. :) That was one of those time periods that life was dealing me more than I thought I could really handle. Since then I have learned I am stronger than I thought, but I know that there will be times in the future that things will get rough again, BUT I do know that I will make it through with the Lord's help and the help of my DH, family & friends.

Are we related? We must be, because I am having the same problem.... When I finally go in and sit down at the machine, I am Ok... Happy, even.... But it's the getting there that is tough.... I have plenty of time to work on one thing or another, but sit in my chair....Chihuahuas on my lap (Little Finn under his quilt), playing with my iPad....his name is Buddy. What's the matter With me?
I have a nice space to work in....with a nice view.....a great sewing machine, and the time....

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
Another thought........sometimes when you don't feel like sewing.......it's best not to...........you would be more likely to make mistakes. Don't worry.....you will be back sewing before you know it. :)

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
When I have a design on the wall I freeze up and can't seem to get it to the machine. I bought some felt so I could make another wall. I have to finish at least one. Right? lol

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
Your mind and body are telling you to slow down. Listen!
I go thru weeks of no mojo, it's a combo of, pain, mild depression and PTSD, and I've finally given in to it, knowing it will end quicker if I don't fight it. Instead, while I'm on an 'up' period, I make the effort to stockpile handwork projects next to my recliner for the 'down' periods.
Sending a hugg!! Pami

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
Take a break. When the project becomes a chore versus a joy, then it is time to go do something else for awhile.
Give yourself some "me" time. The projects will be sitting right where you left them for when your ready to start up again.

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
I wasn't getting anything accomplished - not much since I quit smoking - so I went into my sewing room and just started on something.....a little at a time....how many blocks can I sew together in 5 or 10 minutes....surprised myself and got my mojo back...currently have two quilts sandwiched and waiting to be quilted; another one just waiting for borders and another one the fabric is purchased for and it is next in line and I will be cutting into that one today if it is the last thing I do....I am having a ball but it took quite awhile to get here...and life does get in the way...it will happen when it is time...and then you will be sewing up a storm...and you begin the "cycle" all over again....have been there and done that so many times over the years...you are fine and the "mojo" will come back!
Hugs and prayers to all,
Susie

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
I am right there with you!!! I have not sewn in almost a month! I finally forced myself to go up there yesterday to make something small, which I did. I made a small cord keeper (to put your cell cord or charging cord in so it's not all over the place), but it only took about ten minutes and I was done. At least it was a start.....

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
Gee it's nice to know I have company! I get like this too, where I go all guns and that's it for a,while...this seems to happen when I'm having a problem with a block, a,color scheme, or,what not... Read somewhere that we procrastinate because we're afraid of failure...not sure...then I feel envious of all the projects my friends get done... Golly!

Re: I really wish someone would lite a fire cracker under me!
You are all so great! Some of the posts made me chuckle and some made me cry just a bit. I pray that I get to meet more of you here on earth but if not then we will have one big quilting bee in heaven. LOL
