Default FYI on notions sale at Joanns

If you happen to go to JoAnns this weekend for sales, you need this info.

If you purchase anything notions related, which is 50% off with coupon, it must be a separate transaction from everything else. The 50% notions coupon and the 15% everything coupon are both TRANSACTION coupons, meaning that one will cancel the other out. So, only one can be used per order. I talked to the assistant manager at my JoAnns (actually, totally by surprise - the catholic church in the tiny village where I live was having a chicken BBQ today, and she was there working), and she explained that coupons like this are normally coded so that they can all be used on one transaction, but this is the first time using transaction based coupons. Apparently the word didn't go to all cashiers.

The good news is I can call, talk to the manager on duty, and go tomorrow for a fix/credit.

Well, that's interesting. The cashier told me today I couldn't get the 50% discount off the buttons I purchased because they weren't "on the notions wall". I asked her where the notions wall was, and she told me it was the aisle with the sewing needles, etc. on it. I thought about showing her the pattern I had and that buttons were clearly listed as notions but she looked like she was having a busy enough day as it was.

By the time I drive back over for a fix/credit, I will have eaten up my savings in gas. It's good to know for next time, though!

I was just there and they also told me that buttons, zippers, binding or thread are not notions. Their definition was very narrow. It had to be on the one "notions" wall and there wasn't much there.

If they're going to be that picky, why even bother going?! The more I hear about Joann's, the less impressed I am. My closest Joann's is 30 mi. away & I've never been there. JCY

So far I have had good luck at J's. I get the coupons in the mail, email and 2 competitors that I can use every time. Plus if I have the mind to, I always get 2 of each coupon so if I want to, I use some, take my purchase to my car and go back in and use another round! I figure I am a customer every time I go into the store, plus...it is a fair distance from me. If it was closer, I could go more often, but so far away, once a month is all I can do. I did this once and the manager noticed me and he said, "hey, no problem. long as you shop with us instead of Walmart!" But I did notice once home, that I had a 60% off coupon and 4, 40%'ers, and the 60% was supposed to go to the highest priced item first, which was adhesive spray and instead getting 60% off on the highest price item, it went to a lower priced item and the 40% went to a highest priced item. So next time, I will do the 60% alone, then another transaction for the rest. I couldn't do as much as I do without J's coupons!

Cherie, if it was the 60% that expired Thurs., that was for one cut of fabric, not any reg. priced item. I bough 2 cuts of fabric and was able to use 2-60% coupons plus 2-40% ones for other items i was buying. our clerks will usually scan every coupon I have "just in case".

Just a tip..... When using coupons that's are 60%, 50%, or 40% off an item, the cashier must do the largest one first, followed by the next largest and so on. For some reason if the cashier does the 40% then a 50%, the computer doesn't recognize the 50%, And will apply it to a lower priced item (as was cheri's case). So, always give the cashiers your highest percent off first.

And yes, if you are using a 40% off coupon (or 60 or 50) you can not use the 15% off of the same item. If you purchase all sale items and 1 full price item, you can combine them and get 40% off the full price and 15% off all the sale items, but the 15% will not come off on top of the 40%.

    Hope this helps.

Right, but normally, as in how J's has normally done it, the 40% or 50% was taken off of one item, the highest price regular, but then the 15% would be taken off of everything else. So the 40% or 50% was coded as a single item coupon, while the 15% was coded as a transaction coupon. This weekend, the 50% notions coupon is also coded as a transaction coupon, causing additional issues, and the only fix is to ring the notions in a separate transaction. Which I was told the cashier should have known, but she didn't do that.

You must go into Joann's with the expectation of frustration. Some more of an expectation than others.

In my old life (pre-mommyhood), I was a computer programmer. It's the programmers who are mis-programming and causing these problems. They ought to program the registers to look at ALL the coupons, compare them to ALL your items and then assign the discounts in descending order. But no, they programmed the registers to say "Look at this one coupon and apply it to the highest priced item. Now look at this one coupon and apply it to the next highest priced item. Repeat."

So since Joann's hired such incompetent programmers, you have to do the computer's job: sort your coupons from the highest discount to the lowest and hand them to the clerk in that order.

    Maddening.
