Dad's Americana Quilt: The Return
I know, I know, back in mid-June I posted what we all thought -- and some of us hoped -- was the final chapter in the seemingly unending saga of the Americana quilt I made for my step-dad. But wait, there's more! Dad decided the quilt needs to be entered in the state fair. I pointed out to him that while it's a perfectly lovely quilt, it's not quite good enough to seriously compete at the fair. Undaunted, Dad has persistently "suggested" that we enter it. When he told me he was going to enter it himself. Which, let's be completely honest, he can't do. So I gave in! lol
Dad took it to my friend's house, and my friend -- who was coming up to see me anyway -- brought up to me. It is currently sitting in a large garbage bag on my living room floor. Dad called to make sure it had arrived safe and sound, without scratches or dents. I pointed out to him that, being a quilt, it's impervious to scratches and dents. Undeterred, he wants to make sure I've filled out the entry form, can pay the $1 entry fee, etc. Every day he asks when I'm going to enter it.
It's going to be a long week till Friday afternoon.
In other, fair-related news, I'm entering three photographs, for which I have much higher hopes.
Re: Dad's Americana Quilt: The Return
Good luck with the fair entries! I went to the Iowa Dtate Fair a cople of weeks ago, and there were very many quilts entered in that competition, sone very inspiring. Good luck with the quilt and the photos!
Re: Dad's Americana Quilt: The Return
Go for it! you may be pleasantly surprised at how you do.
Re: Dad's Americana Quilt: The Return
Good luck with the entries. Keeping fingers crossed that you win with some of them.
Re: Dad's Americana Quilt: The Return
I think you might be surprised...hope you do well with both endeavors....you are very talented Meli!
Re: Dad's Americana Quilt: The Return
Your quilt is beautiful! I think that regardless of whether you win a ribbon or not, just the fact that your Dad is so very proud of it - that's better than any ribbon a judge cold give you.
Re: Dad's Americana Quilt: The Return
I agree, you may be pleasantly surprised and many people will get to see it!!!! I truly hope you win something!!!
Re: Dad's Americana Quilt: The Return
That is so cute that your dad wants you to enter it at the fair. He is sooo proud of his quilt. It's only a dollar entry fee, and since you are going to enter pictures anyway, it won't be too much of a hassle to enter. Good luck on the quilt and photos!
Re: Dad's Americana Quilt: The Return
I think it is wonderful that he is so proud of your work. I bet you win something, you are very talented.
Re: Dad's Americana Quilt: The Return
Meli - having seen your photographs, I'm betting on some ribbons. Your quilt? Don't swallow your breath when you see that huge First Place blue ribbon and then the even larger People's Choice. One of my alternative hobbies is painting. Years ago, while living in a very artsy community, I was encouraged to enter some of my work and I truly balked - I certainly am not good enough for competition. Long story short, I was called home for an emergency and DH and a wonderful friend entered several of my pieces - I have a Best of Show, People's Choice, and First Place ribbons of which I am proud. I have a strong feeling that you are a much better quilter than you think.
YOU GO GIRL!!
Re: Dad's Americana Quilt: The Return
Good luck with the entry. I hope you are pleasantly surprised! It's heartwarming to know he loves his quilt so much.
Re: Dad's Americana Quilt: The Return
Thanks, gang! I've learned to toss my quilts on the galloping horse and take a few steps back. Pretty certain the judges won't do that. But, after thinking about it all day, I've decided to also get the Colores Sunburst quilt that I made for my best friend and her husband last year. Put it in a different category, of course, so I'm not competing against myself. Feel more confident about a ribbon with that one, but time will tell.
Re: Dad's Americana Quilt: The Return
I think it's very sweet. I haven't seen the quilt. I'd love to take a peek. Can you direct me where on the forum to find it?
Re: Dad's Americana Quilt: The Return
Ditto what Sandy said!
PS - when I read her post about living in an 'artsy' community I pictured our Sandy in hippy garb living in a commune - not sure why, but it made me chuckle.

Meli, I'm sure your Dad is making you crazy, but I gotta' say, I think it's adorable that he is so proud of you and that quilt that he's convinced it belongs in a show. And I also gotta' say, I loved the pictures of your Americana quilt; you get a blue ribbon from me! :D I say go for it! Hope you have a wonderful time at the fair.
