Has anyone else noticed?
I'm thinking that EB, has noticed the fame and success that M* is achieving... all of a sudden I am getting a barrage of "quilt tute video" from QIAD!!! Me thinks perhaps the torch has been passed... I know there is always room for "more" quilting stuff!!!,,, but after watching Jenny for so long,,, I applaude the simplicity and straight forward conversation of her work and the genuine honesty..............Yes, the newest "hexi/tool" was good with Eleanor,,, but i'm a simple gal and love Jenny's style... (perhaps because she sews like me... no pins and trim if needed....:).. not for all, but Jenny, your my idol!!!! I hope Al can pass this along to the Doan family... keep up the good work.. I'm planning on coming to M* in a year or so,, when the "retreat" is up, running and whatever it costs will be fine by me!!! :)GB

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
I am getting a whole bunch of tutorial video links in my email daily. None of them come close to Jenny. I feel the same way about M*. Good things do happen to good people.

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
While Eleanor Burns has done a lot for quilting over the years and has some nice patterns/fabrics/tools out there. I just CAN NOT listen to her voice. It hits that pitch that makes me cringe all the way to my toenails.
I'm sticking with Jenny! You watch her tutorials and you feel that you can make what you see.

Hahaha..ok, I didn't know who EB was - so I googled her and watched a video. I happened upon an absolutely BEAUTIFUL pattern from her "Quick Trip" series but I do see what you mean about the voice. She seems like a very sweet person but - give me Jenny. LOL
Also - now I'm wondering if Jenny was mimicing her in the Jelly Roll Race tutorial when she throws that first 18" cut off of the strip away over her shoulder? I remember the first time I saw that video I thought I wasn't getting a little inside joke - and now that I've seen this EB video where she just tosses the scraps off on the floor I think I might finally be getting the humor. :icon_giggle:

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
I've always loved EB, I've done her Trip quilt many times and it's one of my all time favs. But, I relate more to Jenny and her videos are more relaxed and easy to follow. Jenny did a 2 for 1 quilt, quick and easy to follow. EB did a 2 for 1 quilt and I thought I go crazy by the end of the tutorial. It just wasn't for me. Plus, bless her heart, she seems to be stuck in the past on fabrics and colors. IMHO.

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
Ok, this is my thought on this; While I watched this new video I was thinking "I bet Jenny could do it better and no one would have to buy another template( think 5" half hexi placed on fold of fabric)
So it begs the question - Has Jenny coached EB?
-
Re: Has anyone else noticed?
EB's voice doesn't bother me at all. lol I guess I'm one of a few who doesn't mind it. I really do like Jenny. I've met her and feel she's just a great lady.
-
Re: Has anyone else noticed?
Yes, I see the same with Craftsy too. I became attached to Jenny because she was simple AND she wasn't a perfectionist. She gives you enough in the tute to actually do it on your own. I do watch QIAD, but sometimes there are huge gaps in the process. Often I have seen it done easier with Jenny!
Goooooo Missouri * and Jenny!! Rah Rah Rah! Lol!

What tutorial? Link?

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
Ok truth be,told I am a huge Jenny fan. Love her tuts! She is down to earth and I find it easy to learn from her ! That being said Imdo have three EB books, and have leaned from those also.
-
Re: Has anyone else noticed?
Do you know who I think is boring to watch? Fons and Porter. I like to watch Jodie Burrows. I have one of her books, her rulers, and a DVD. Love her.

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
I am always open to new learning experience, but I have to admit that Jenny is the one that brought me to my sewing machine to actually "do it" instead of just absorbing information. Jenny's down-to-earth style allows for the mistakes we all make and shows us how to deal with them. She presents the journey to us as one of fun and joy rather than perfection. Hands down, she is my go-to lady first. (and she always makes me smile)

YES!!! EXACTLY what Sandy B Said!!! I have watched many quilting tutorials since finding Jenny, and many are good and I learn new things that I can now begin to incorporate. BUT, I never would have thought, " Hey, I think I really could do that!" if I hadn't found Jenny. She makes it all seem so DO-able, and FUN! [and she makes me giggle. . . NONE of the others do that for me.]

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
I am a huge Eleanor Burns fan! To me, she is warm and genuine, I don't mind her voice a bit and I have several of her books and love her tutes! BUT . . . if I could only watch one person's quilt videos, it would be Jenny over anyone else, hands down! She is just as warm, friendly and genuine, and I relate so much to her quilting style. Every time I watch a tute by Jenny, I feel like I'm spending time with a quilty friend. :D
-
Re: Has anyone else noticed?
I can relate so much better to our Jenny, she is so warm and friendly like your mom, grandma, or sister talking to you. everyone else is just ho hum.
-
Re: Has anyone else noticed?
Ah, yes,,, you must be a lot younger than me.....LOL... Welcome to the world of fabraholics!!:icon_wave:

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
I pray that this post did not lead anyone to believe that I don't like EB or Fand P or anyone!!!! I was hoping to put the praise and thanks out to Jenny for what she's done for this craft.... I think mostly because she brought it "home to us all"... Quilting IMHO had really gotten a bad rap for having to be about perfection.... that whole 1/4" thing, as I call it was stressed way too much... YES I get the point of it,, but Jenny has proved something I've always tried to mentor to my younger friends... it's not about being perfect,,, it's about having fun and feeling accomplishment.. Progress, NOT Perfection.... it's a Hobby!!!! I was a "groupie" for Alex Anderson and loved each and every guest she had, but my favorite gal.... Rachel Clark,, the girl who just "did it".. google her or watch her old episodes on SQ (HGTV), if you want to see some cool stuff...

I used to see Eleanor Burns on PBS and Alex Anderson's show YEARS ago. She always reminded me of a Romper Room teacher. But, I love her work.

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
I don't follow EB. I have seen some great technique, but I don't enjoy being talked to like a child. She would have been a GREAT grade school teacher, for sure! I saw a video of her teaching her ex-husbands offspring a 'trip around the world' quilt. It was lovely, for KIDS. Just sayin...
Jenny, on the other hand, has a teaching style that is more relatable to grown ups.
Both fall short, in my humble opinion, on teaching accuracy for newbies. I haven't been sewing my entire life. I'm just getting the accuracy down.
'Squaring off' the block is SO relevant, and the 'quilt in a day', and 'quilting quickly' methods don't really address this.
I'm not looking to enter my quilt in competition, but I would want it to be close to their finished result.
SIGH.
Another SIGH....

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
I love Jenny's tutorials and I love the fact that Natalie has come up with some cool templates for us...that being said I do also watch the Gourmet Quilter and enjoy her but it isn't the same as watching Jenny.....I have taken both of Jenny's classes on Craftsy and learned allot of little tips and tricks from her....she has helped me tremendously in enjoying the process of quilting from choosing fabrics all the way to finishing the binding....there is no one like our Jenny!

I LOVE the Gourmet Quilter, as well. Really great tutorials. Fons and Porter are out of touch, or maybe they're in touch with experienced, hard-core quilters. That's not me.
I get their magazine, I will be NOT renewing.
I will follow Jenny, always. She has to be ELATED, and blind-sided to some degree,
Who KNEW?
GREAT things really DO happen to good people!!

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
I like Jenny & I like Fons & Porter too. I think Fons & Porter is really good at showing the "right" way of doing things and showing a newbie like me the best practices.
However, I agree with Sandy B that Jenny's tutorials are the ones that actually get me sewing --- and feeling good about what I make rather than discouraged because it isn't perfect!!

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
Great discussion.. and Well earned praise for Jenny's tutorials. I've enjoyed sewing more than any time in my life after seeing several of her videos.
I learn from each person I've watched on the net.. even the blogs have taught me stuff and helped me grow. I've a long way to go and will never absorb half of it all, but the JOY of making this trip is soo worth all my time and $$. Now I understand my Grandmothers Love of Fabric and Quilting!! I wish she could see the fabric we have today.. She'd be hoarding every piece she could get!!! And Maybe she would share her secrets with me... (which she never did with anyone in life)

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
I really enjoy Jenny's tuts. I learned how to bind a quilt with the machine instead of hand sewing and not feel guilty about it from her. What a great feeling that was. I was feeling horrible because everything I had read said you had to hand sew or its not done right and that's not for me at all. Jenny cheerfully explained how to do it and made me feel like it was a vialble option. I did learn how to do flying geese from Fons and Porter, I do enjoy thier shows too.
-
Re: Has anyone else noticed?
I absolutely adore the EB flying geese ruler!!!!
-
Re: Has anyone else noticed?
EBurns has had videos on her website for years. Not many knew they were there though. Same with Kaye Wood, Shar Jorghenson , Billie Lauder, and Georgia Bonesteel's websites. The older quilt names have semi retired and not many new quilters know about them.
-
Re: Has anyone else noticed?
EB's Log Cabin Quilt in a Day was the first quilt I made. And I was so proud of myself. Now that I actually know how to hand quilt as opposed to just tying a quilt, I may have to pull that quilt down from the wall and put some real quilting on it! Oh, and I agree with some previous posters about EB's voice . . . I just can't listen to her. Her books are fine and I've learned something from each of them. But as far as watching tuts . . . Jenny's the best!!

I have searched the net high and low for old SQ episodes and have only found a very few. PLEASE tell me where to find them!!!!!
Personally, I love all of the teachers out there. They each bring their own style and techniques and I love to watch them all from EB to JD! I never missed Simply Quilts and loved to watch Mary Ellen Hopkins and Doreen Speckman, both now deceased. Billy Lauder and all the others - remember the man who was a bridge builder/engineer and his wife asked him to make a quilt frame? He became a quilter and was on SQ more than once. F & P are a little too "fussy" for me, but I still watch them and have learned a lot from them. There is just so much good information out there!
Oh, by the way, several of you mentioned that Eleanor would have been a good school teacher, I believe she was before her boys were born.

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
I don't subscribe to the Fons & Porter magazine, but one of the things I do love about them is that in every issue they have at least one (and sometimes more) vintage quilts. Sometimes they include a pattern for the vintage quilt and sometimes it seems to just be a story more about the history, but I really enjoy seeing the vintage quilts and learning about them -- even if it's something I could never make! :) They also sometimes show vintage quilts on their PBS show.

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
No slur on either lady. It's called tracking. Using a source like Googleanalytics and Facebook Connect (on this site) does help MQ and others sell. Some sites say they do share info, some don't tell you, and some sites don't share. Just read the Terms of Service for each site and/or check the privacy policy. With all the push to market, you will probably see more. If they are using targeted marketing, at least what you get will pertain to quilting and sewing. If you frequent Jenny's studio, some bot has probably tracked it, and is selling the info to other marketers. Google admits it. They have that policy in Gmail. Google owns Youtube. If you are enjoying the videos, keep on doing so.
This is just an explanation as to why you get other recommendations that you didn't ask for.
I have bought from Nancy's Notions. I get catalogs from other sewing and quilting sites that I have never visited on line or contacted. They share mailing lists and admit it. It isn't illegal, and you should be able to opt out or block if you don't like it. Or toss it if it's snail mail.

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
Alex Anderson's Simply Quilts was where I learned most of my quilting techniques, in the beginning I didn't always understand what she and her guests were talking about but I always learned something for each show. I attended one of Alex's retreats and she was just as nice and friendly as can be. She also had a forum where I met some many quilters, some became real life friends who met each year in Lancaster PA for the show, shopping and hanging out. I was a bit lost for a few years until I found M* and Jenny. Jenny is folksy and just draws people in with her easy style, it is as if a good friend is helping us learn a new technique or quilt pattern. The forum here is the best one I've found since Alex's. Found so many friends here that if I miss the Good Morning posts every day I feel the day began bad. One have met one person in person, that's quilting trish as we both are old "Lexies" (nickname of the quilters on Alex's forum).

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
I started to "get into quilting" with Jenny's Craftsy classes. From there I started hunting and came across Eleanor Burns who is a wealth of information but she is very old school as well. I can envision doing everything by hand when I watch her quilt. Yes, her voice is a bit grading but she is a sweet and funny lady who is eager to teach you quilting. Jenny's style is down to earth and simple. No quilting police and just have fun. They both have their own styles and both are full of tips and tricks and so much knowledge. You Tube is full of quilting lessons and teachers of many various degrees and styles, but these two are my favorites and I do watch them all the time........they are in one word....."inspiration" !

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
The very first quilt I made, start to finish, was using Eleanor Burns log cabin pattern. I loved how fast you could put together a top. It's still my favorite pattern. There were several women in our office, one of whom was a quilter. We formed a group and she took us to the fabric store and gave us some pointers on choosing fabrics, colors etc. (this was way before pre-cuts). We completed several quilts; always using the same pattern but our own choice of fabrics before splitting off into our own directions/projects. It was fun watching everyone grow (or not!!). Some people were perfectionists, some just sewed with wild abandon and total disregard for the 1/4" but it was all fun. We carried our machines and supplies to work every Wednesday and sewed after work in the lunchroom. A big thank you to Barbara D. in MA...maybe you're part of the forum! I completed quite a few projects and then got bogged down on a BOM for 10 years! I am so stubborn that I won't start anything new until the previous project is completed. I finally forced myself to finish and about that time, along came Jenny. I know if I hadn't found her, that BOM would have been the end of my sewing days. I love that Jenny doesn't sweat the small stuff, it's always about quick and easy, she doesn't always set her seams, she's one of us. Love you Jenny!

Re: Has anyone else noticed?
Jenny is simply the BEST at what she does. I love her naturalness, her simplicity, and the obvious fun she has teaching us. And, when she is done, I know I can actually make a quilt.... Her streamlined methods make so much sense.... She makes what looks mop lex, and hard, easy.... I feel that I have redisvovered quilting! Go Jenny!
