    Default Quilt Guilds, your thoughts?

Hi. I'm thinking of joining my local quilt guild, but have some questions. For those of you that are members of quilt guilds I'm wondering...

What is it that the quilt guilds do?

Do you have to be a really good quilter to be in a guild?

    Thanks for any answers.

I'm not a member, but I wouldn't think they would limit you because of your skill level. Most guilds meet at inconvenient times for me.

I was first vice of ours last year. I love the guild for its activities like, sewing days once a week, retreats and lunches. That being said I jumped into an office too quick and the background politics sucked the fun out of it for me personally. I still talk to everyone but I took the summer off from the guild experience but I plan to go to the sew day Thursday. I think they are fun and sewers of all levels and tastes participate in the one here. I say go for it but wait to sign up for anything like an office.

My guild has guest speakers througout the year which I find interesting and inspiring. We have a mentor night, where guild members put on mini workshops. Then there is the "yard sale" event where stash and notions change hands. My favorite activities are Sew and Show (a quilter's version of show and tell) and Community Service. It is amazing what some of the members are putting together and that can range from a small table mat to a California King. The levels of expertise are from beginner to advanced and NO, you do not need to be an expert to join (or participate). Community Service for this guild donates quilts to local hospitals for the childrens' wards. We are all encouraged to contribute to the Community Service activity.

The third Tuesday of the month is my evening to sit with my fellow quilters and let the rest of the world pass me by.

Go check it out and see if it fits.

I joined the local guild last night. They meet monthly and have a sit and sew afternoon monthly. The guild is informal but they also have Show and Tell, provide instruction for each other, and do community service making quilts for newborns and children. Check it out...you don't have anything to lose by doing so.

Gayle - I have to chime in. I've belonged to our local quilt guild going on my third year. Ironically, I was not aware when I attended my first meeting that my sister and a dear friend from high school were members there (I've since discovered there are four or five former high school friends as members). I joined in December so got to attend their special Christmas exchange - what do they call it when you get a gift and it can be taken from you? Anyway, it was a very fun filled evening. Sitting near the back because I wasn't aware of what was going on (didn't have a gift to add to the collection), one very 'senior' member (meaning long-time - not necessarily old) came in late and sat beside me. She was extremely friendly and we did yak back and forth as if we'd known each other for a very long time. While I don't socialize with any of the members (other than Li'l Sis) outside the guild, I have found that there is a mixture of those who are very outgoing and friendly, welcoming you into the fold - and there is also a group who aren't as outgoing and remain more difficult to know.

Our guild does a variety of fun things through the year - starting with the Secret Pal, to charity projects (we have about five different ones going now), to fat quarter exchanges (you have to make something with two you receive and show it in December - we pick in September). We recently celebrated the guild's 25th year. All in all, I find it extremely entertaining, have made some wonderful quilty friends, learned a lot from our guests, and it does give me one night out so I can relax. Our programs usually include someone who has made a name for themselves in the quilting world, but there are fun times also - a guild picnic in June, and a special dinner over the December holidays. Our most recent guest speaker was a lady from the Kansas City area who makes quilts from pre-cuts (no, it wasn't Jenny . . .) We've also had traveling trunk shows and many unusual programs (Sashiko, flour sack collections, Amy Bradley, etc.) And every meeting we have a show and tell - usually quite a few members showing of their recent works. It is great fun, and I am certainly pleased I got enough gumption to see what it is all about.

    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

Gayle, I started attending our local quilt guild in 2004 -- I met kind and generous women, who share their knowledge of quilting, their hearts, and their food (and recipes). We have monthly meetings, attend shop hops, quilt shows, and had a great retreat last year. The friendships I've made at guild have helped me through some really rough times, and have allowed me to be part of a giving and loving group that I cherish. The skill level of members is all over the place, we have newbies as well as quilters that have won awards...no one is judgmental -- I've only encountered encouragement and kindness.
