I went to the Piecemakers guild meeting yesterday afternoon. It was a small group which is what I expected. There were 10 people there and 3 of us were new. But they seem to be an active group. The guild donates quilts to the local pregnancy and children's advocacy centers. They said they made and donated 18 quilts to each of the centers last year.
The guild is considered to be a specialized "homemaker's club" under the umbrella of the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extensive Service. There are several homemaker clubs in our county and every November they have a one-day bazaar where the clubs sell handmade items to raise money. The discussion last night was around participation in the bazaar. They said small items seem to sell the best. Oh lawdy, what to make???
Each meeting has a "show and tell" and members take turns teaching a class. (That would be the blind leading the sighted in my case!) Yesterday, a member showed three full size quilts that she appliqued and quilted, all by hand. She hand-stippled parts of one quilt. I've never seen that before. Her quilts were very, very nice! She also did the lesson on binding a quilt.
I didn't know anyone in the group but they were very friendly and welcoming. There's one guy in the guild and he was elected as the new president during the meeting. I'm planning to go to the monthly Sit-N-Sew session later this month. It's an afternoon of sewing/chatting/etc. I may try to get some fabric for a baby/kids quilt and start one then...we'll see.
