I'm in our dining room! Our kitchen can sit eight if we are really non-formal (ie another family with kids lol) so most days I have the room to myself, although my kids like to hang out there if I'm there; drawing, beading etc. My 6 yr old has started wanting to sew herself of late so I will have to get her a machine of her own for Christmas.

Advantage of the dining room: Really big table, good lighting during the day (although the overhead lamp needs to be changed, all it does is light up the ceiling!), close to the family (kids are usually in the next room).

Disadvantage: I need to store EVERYTHING away from time to time. Also not a proper sewing table, which is a hindrance when I quilt.

I have a small 8 x 10 spare room that was made into my sewing room last year...I have one machine set up on my cutting table and then another machine set up on a small desk...also I have my iron nearby and a tv...so I am happy to have my small space...I have some fabric in my sewing room and then some is in our other spare bedroom, plus in some bins in the basement...we have a small ranch, but it is enough for us now that the kids are all gone...

We just moved into our new home. It has an inlaw suite in the basement. My hubby wanted to rent it out. I convinced him, we needed the room for the kids to play and storage. Of course he agreed. So now my sewing space is the bedroom in the basement. I'm slowly setting it up to work for me. I've tried several ways but I'm not comfortable yet. I love it because I can just get up and go, not have to worry about cleaning up when it's time to cook dinner.

My sewing room is a spare bedroom 10x12. I really LOVE my sewing area due to the fact that husband made be a beautiful sewing island with lots of storage. My sewing machine sets down into the island and I cut and sew on this island. The island's size aprox is 4.5'X 6.5' it is island height which has helped alot with the back issues I have. I wish the room were bigger because one day I hope to get a longarm. We plan to sell our home if all goes well in the next 2 to 3 years. So I am keeping in mind that I would like an even larger room next time fit the longarm. The Island was built so he can disassemble it and bring it with us. If I could change anything at the current moment it would be better lighting.

I have half of my full basement as my sewing room. I love it. I don't have to clean up after each sewing session, I can start and stop whenever I want to and not worry about leaving a mess.

For everyday sewing and piecing I use a very small desk (about 2 x 3 ft) in front of my bedroom's window. Now and then, for projects requiring more space, I pack all I need and drive 3 km to my family's old place, where the livingroom is 700 sq ft with a 10 ft long dining table. I keep a spare sewing machine in a closet there (my first basic one).

My present house is small, but the spare room is comparatively large and long: about 9 x 20 ft. I plan to divide it in halves so one part would be my library and sewing room. What I haven't made my mind up yet is how to place the sewing table. Many of you have your machines along a side wall, mostly facing a window. But I am having issues with the glare coming from outside: I often get blind by sunset. Wouldn't you rather recommend putting the table across so the light comes from the side? Then another question is: how high should the cutting table be (I'm 5 ft 9" tall)? I'm thinking of "recycling" a kitchen cabinet for that purpose.

My sewing space is in the master bedroom. I have a sewing cabinet that is usually pushed up against the wall. I do have enough space to pull it out and put up an additional table when quilting. I wish I had a dedicated sewing room, but that just isn't an option right now. I used to have to sew at the kitchen table and take everything down when I was done so this is much better. I do still try to tidy up and put my notions, fabric, etc away when I'm done sewing, but at least I can leave my machine up and all my stuff is stored right there in the cabinet.

I do wish I had a second table set up so I could leave both machines out...we have space for another small table in our room, but I'm not sure I want to add something else. I need a bit of open space!

I sew at my dining table and have to put things away everytime. I'm hoping once my DS has renovated his home he will take his micro, bed settee, tv stand (the length of the bed) 50 inch 3d tv, kettle, bookcase, crib and boxes and give me a spare room which I can turn into a sewing/guest room ....once can only keep dreaming

I have a space in our basement that has a door to close and not have to worry about the mess. It is an odd shape but that is fine. I have a table to cut/iron/lay out on that is about 4 1/2 by 8 with a padded top. I just move my cutting mat around on it or hang it on the wall if I need to sandwich. I have a very long counter with one sewing machine and TV and another cubby hole with a serger. There is a closet/1/4 bath so I don't have to run upstairs to potty. It is pretty much heaven to me even though it is not too pretty to look at.

Edit: ergonomically speaking your table should be about as high as your bent elbow.
