    Default Need some advice.

I was thinking I would try to hand quilt a UFO I have had for several years now. I have never tried to hand quilt an actual quilt quilt. I finished a wall hanging someone gave me several years ago (pic in my sewing room pictures) ;it has hot air balloons on it; but that is it. I bought a "Fan frame" on E-Bay several years back but have never used it. I have set it up and it seems like it would work but I am not sure even how to get the quilt started. Does anyone own or have you used the fan quilt frame before? I bought my own rails which are 1 1/4" 6 ' dowels that are heavy duty and straight. Then I added the cable thinking it would give the frame more stability (works great too). I know I probably need leaders but I am at odds as to how to attach them straight. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My UFO is a Sun Bonnet Sue quilt I made but have never finished it is a little bigger than a twin size.

    Thanks in advance.

THAT is interesting. I've never seen nor heard of one of these before today. If it were me, I would be hanging quilts on it. Are you sure you are supposed to actually quilt on one? I will be watching for further replies because I am intrigued now.

Yea This lady sells them on e-Bay. I bought this about 8? years ago but have never tried it. Her reviews are pretty encouraging. But I have never thought to use it for a quilt rack....Maybe if things don't work out with the quilting I will rethink my plans. Thanks for the idea

I looked at the ebay site and she states that she would include a step by step pictured instructions with the purchase of her frame. Here is the one I found on ebay and she almost tells you how to load the quilt on it. Fan Design Quilting Frame Hand Quilt Handcrafted in USA Selling Since 2006 | eBay. Hope this helps

I have hand quilted many quilts and would find it very hard to quilt on a frame. I like using a 14" hoop, so that I can turn the quilt as I am quilting. I wish you luck though if you want to use your frame! I hope you are successful at it. Hand quilting has such a nice look about it.

As it turned out I got my quilt out and added to the borders and by the time I got through it is way to big for my frame but I could always buy longer rails and do it. I may go with the hoop thing Cyndi. I found a 24" wooden hoop at a flea market last week but didn't buy it. I probably should have. I am going today to see if they still have it. It was $5.00 and was in great shape. Is this a good price for it?

If you can buy a 24" hoop for $5 and it is actually sturdy - go for it. I bought a special quilting frame at Hobby Lobby and it was well over $20 - had to return it because it wouldn't work on my machine - I didn't want it to do hand sewing. When I hand quilt I actually just do it right in my lap without a hoop or frame. DH built me a spectacular quilting frame (see my albums) and I found it very difficult for this old body to use . . .

I would definitely try your frame with a smaller quilt though - as for leaders, let me know when you are ready and I'll give you some pointers.
    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

If you do decide to make leaders, here's an idea. Cut your leader fabric the length of your rod and about 12" wide. Then sew a pocket the whole length of the leader. Make the pocket just a tad larger than the circumference of the rod. Make one for each rod and slide it all the way on. Then either sew or pin your quilt to the edge of the leader.

    Hope this helps!
