    Default Brights or Mellow fabrics?

Our forum members are some of the best quilters anywhere on the internet. The creativity, color selections and intriguing patterns are such an inspiration!

I know I'm an Aires and my color is red, however, I always seem to lean toward the oranges, yellows, teals, and turquoise. Maybe I have a split personality with the warm and cool colors! And, I sure love the brights. Brights always make me feel happy. I feel a bit intimidated by stepping out of my comfort zone but I'm going to make a blue quilt and then try a black & white (probably with some Aires "red"). I have also put on my list, something subdued. LOL (hope I won't fall asleep)l

So, what do you do when you feel totally out of the comfort zone and want to try something new? How do you find nice fabrics to co-ordinate if you're really on the other side of the color wheel?

I'm making a quilt for my sister with colors that she likes. I, by no means, dislike the colors, but I just don't gravitate that way. It'll be okay - step outside of the box.

Quilting magazines and Pininterest are great places for grabbing up ideas!
I really need to get off the exclamation point.
It may give people the idea that I'm bright and cheerful all the time....

I look at moda bake shop and google. I'm a fall girl so I like the country colors and warm tones. I tend to buy a layer cake and a matching print for the border. I don't venture muchlol

I don't think I could be of any help. I simply love quilts/fabric/color/bright or mellow. LOL I have fabric for 4 quilts at the moment, one is lavendar/purples with greens, one is blue with green and gray, one is the mine craft that has almost any/every color out there and the last will be pinks with lavendar, blues and greens. The one I did for my daughter was lavanders/pinks and the one I did for my grandson is orange/yellow/green. See, I don't think you could through a color combo at me that I wouldn't like. I have thought about in the future I would like to so a black and white and I would love to do one in blues and greens.
    Be blessed,
    Sandy

I don't do so well stepping out of my comfort zone. I appreciate the soft, girlie-girl colors/prints, but the two I've started have wound up being ufo's as I, at the end of the day, just don't like them. So, I just stick with what I like. Right now I'm working on a batik navy & pale yellow Jacobs Ladder. I'm getting my punch from the deep navy combined with the pale yellow. As Kathy said, "Do what makes you happy!" Quilting should be fun!

You must do what you love to keep you happy unless it is a commissioned piece of course.

I think I have made up color issues. I say I don't like green yet I have some beautiful greens from Cyndi that I love and am planning on using soon. I say I don't like oranges yet have a mug rug from Misa that is orange and red and I love it. I think maybe I love all colors but in my own quilts I am truly drawn to the contrast of black with anything. LQS owner calls my work modern. I call it black with a splash.

While my favorite color is green, I really love call colors. My Mom used to say that when I was little and I went grocery shopping with her, I would insist on getting one of each color - soap, tissues, toilet paper (boy, am I dating myself!). So, while I gravitate towards greens, sage to teal, blues and browns, I have planned quilts in every color of the rainbow. Step outside of the box - you may love it!

Since I do a lot of commission work I often have little choice in what's on my machine. Some I downright hate and struggle to get them done, others I have a little licence with and can add the make or break sparkle needed.

Me personally? I'm always drawn to pink or lav blue, but do sometimes go for something very not me when making a sample for one of my own patterns. Not everything can be girly girl and I force myself to make unisex or masculine versions too, and usually pleased with the results.

    Cheers, Pami
