Brights or Mellow fabrics?
Our forum members are some of the best quilters anywhere on the internet. The creativity, color selections and intriguing patterns are such an inspiration!
I know I'm an Aires and my color is red, however, I always seem to lean toward the oranges, yellows, teals, and turquoise. Maybe I have a split personality with the warm and cool colors! :D And, I sure love the brights. Brights always make me feel happy. I feel a bit intimidated by stepping out of my comfort zone but I'm going to make a blue quilt and then try a black & white (probably with some Aires "red"). I have also put on my list, something subdued. LOL (hope I won't fall asleep)l
So, what do you do when you feel totally out of the comfort zone and want to try something new? How do you find nice fabrics to co-ordinate if you're really on the other side of the color wheel?
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
I'm making a quilt for my sister with colors that she likes. I, by no means, dislike the colors, but I just don't gravitate that way. It'll be okay - step outside of the box.
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
Quilting magazines and Pininterest are great places for grabbing up ideas!
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
I look at moda bake shop and google. I'm a fall girl so I like the country colors and warm tones. I tend to buy a layer cake and a matching print for the border. I don't venture muchlol
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
I say, "Do what makes you happy!" Quilting should be fun!
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
I don't think I could be of any help. I simply love quilts/fabric/color/bright or mellow. LOL I have fabric for 4 quilts at the moment, one is lavendar/purples with greens, one is blue with green and gray, one is the mine craft that has almost any/every color out there and the last will be pinks with lavendar, blues and greens. The one I did for my daughter was lavanders/pinks and the one I did for my grandson is orange/yellow/green. See, I don't think you could through a color combo at me that I wouldn't like. I have thought about in the future I would like to so a black and white and I would love to do one in blues and greens.
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
I don't do so well stepping out of my comfort zone. I appreciate the soft, girlie-girl colors/prints, but the two I've started have wound up being ufo's as I, at the end of the day, just don't like them. So, I just stick with what I like. Right now I'm working on a batik navy & pale yellow Jacobs Ladder. I'm getting my punch from the deep navy combined with the pale yellow. As Kathy said, "Do what makes you happy!" Quilting should be fun!
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
You must do what you love to keep you happy unless it is a commissioned piece of course.
I think I have made up color issues. I say I don't like green yet I have some beautiful greens from Cyndi that I love and am planning on using soon. I say I don't like oranges yet have a mug rug from Misa that is orange and red and I love it. I think maybe I love all colors but in my own quilts I am truly drawn to the contrast of black with anything. LQS owner calls my work modern. I call it black with a splash.
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
While my favorite color is green, I really love call colors. My Mom used to say that when I was little and I went grocery shopping with her, I would insist on getting one of each color - soap, tissues, toilet paper (boy, am I dating myself!). So, while I gravitate towards greens, sage to teal, blues and browns, I have planned quilts in every color of the rainbow. Step outside of the box - you may love it!
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
Since I do a lot of commission work I often have little choice in what's on my machine. Some I downright hate and struggle to get them done, others I have a little licence with and can add the make or break sparkle needed.
Me personally? I'm always drawn to pink or lav blue, but do sometimes go for something very not me when making a sample for one of my own patterns. Not everything can be girly girl and I force myself to make unisex or masculine versions too, and usually pleased with the results.
Cheers, Pami
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
Not sure I can help, because I, too, am one that gravitates toward certain colors/color families. I am a Virgo, but don't keep up with the zodiac stuff, so I didn't know I had a color! lol I love brights and I also gravitate toward the fall/autumn colors. LOVE Christmas fabric too! Just can't seem to wrap my head around the pastels, the reproduction prints or the "civil war" era prints. Have seen a couple of quilts made from repro prints that I liked, but they were on the very bright end of the scale. I have a baby quilt that I have to do for a friend that is due mid October....and yes, it has pastels in it, but there is also a royal blue, orange, and grass green in the coordinating fabrics....so I will be happy with it. :icon_bigsmile:
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
I love all colors and enjoy working on them all, seeing how the different combos all work together. Yellow is my least favorite color but I made my bedroom quilt yellow and blue. Favorite color is purple. but far to boring if all I did was purple. I say Taste the rainbow let it rule experience it all.

I don't really follow astrology but I do find it amusing at time and I think the color thing has some merit. Virgo is an Earth sign and that's why you're drawn to the fall colors.......colors of the earth, the beautiful greens, browns, rust, oranges, tan, blues, etc. Virgo's colors are brown & navy.
I'm definitely drawn toward brights and I like florals as well. Maybe that's why I'm always drawn toward the shades of red, orange, peach and aqua. My aim is to go in another direction and use some modern, maybe geometric prints in a modern, unfamiliar pattern and color.
Thanks all for your great suggestions!
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
I'm a Virgo. When I was in grade school I wore a lot of brown. Then someone asked me 'why are you always wearing brown?' lol Living here for 30 years and making kids clothes I get drawn to brights and florals. I appreciate the work in Civil War quilts but would never make one. I guess I like simple, cheerful and modern too :)
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
OK, so I just took some quizzes online to determine my color. I'm a Sagittarius, and am kind of a homebody, suffer from anxiety and depression, am very studious, and love order. One quiz said I'm green, two said orange, and one said I was boring white. i think I'll go with orange - the description sounded the best.
"Orange is a very pretty color. It is in between red and yellow. Which means that you are a little of of both. You can get angry, but you are also mellow at times."
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
Never followed the zodiac much either it tells me my color is yellow...The color I like the least... and my lucky number is 5...for me its always been 7. but being the twins I can have opposites so guessing thats where purple and 7 come from...LOL

LOL Amy, you really got the mix! I've never seen a chart with those colors. Sagitarians usually have a deep rich purple for their color.

Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
I almost always make bright quilts. My problem area is green and yellows. I can't seem to wrap my brain around those colors. I have tried and just can't put together something I like.
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
I like all colors in the right place. Only thing I won't do is straight up earth tones all together in one quilt. Just not something I would want to look at long enough to make it. If I'm working with an earthy color, I need to march across the color wheel and pick up it's complement
Re: Brights or Mellow fabrics?
Interesting.....brown, maybe, I am quite often told that I look good in brown when I wear it, but don't own much of it. Navy, ummm--no, turquoise, teal, royal---yes, definitely. Purple is my favorite color, but I wear more of the turq, teal, royal and lately the corals/oranges that are so popular. So maybe I am just mixed up!! LOL
