Default Ever have one of those days?

Or more than one day in a row? I am working on piecing a new top using the "Bent out of Square" pattern which is basically a log cabin type block but the strips are cut wonky. Yesterday I sewed one strip together twice, the first time it was too long and I figured out I sewed it on the wrong side, second time I sewed it on it was too long. . . What? Then I figured out I had the WRONG piece altogether! bottom instead of side. . . after I finished that set of blocks I decided to step away from the machine Then I decided I really need to get the quilt top that is finished and waiting to be quilted sandwiched. . . it is for my dad's 85th b-day in October but I need the space on my design wall Anyway, got the backing all cut to size ready to start sandwiching and realized I did not have the right batting! Dad had asked me once if I used "insulation" in my quilts so I want to use a thicker batting Anyway then I get up early this morning and go back to my Bent out of Square blocks, finished one without incident and then on the last round of the second block I was working on sewed on a piece, flipped it open - Sewed the strip backwards! Got the seam ripper out, very carefully this time (I thought) placed it on the right side and yes made sure I had the right piece and sewed again. . . cut it and realized I had done it again - sewed it on the WRONG side. So now I am venting before I cut a new piece. Good thing I never buy just what I need but always have left over! LOL

OK got that out of my system hehe I do have a question - have any of you used wool batting and did you like it for the long haul? I was thinking that would be my batting of choice for dad's quilt. I used it in my last quilt but I just finished it and it hasn't been washed or anything. Just wondering if there are going to be issues?

We all have them - I'm tangling with a satin dress right now. I've had the same with quilts. You have the right name for it.

I haven't used wool but have usesd 300 weight fleece. Very thick and warm. I do like the idea of using 2 layers of cotton batting. Someone just recently did that for a more poof look in the quilting but I think it is great to add real extra warmth.

I have days like that a lot! Sometimes you just have to step away from the machine

I have never used wool batting, but I bet it is super warm. BTW - is wool batting machine washable?

Mary, the package said it is washable and it does not shrink. It is SUPER warm and soft! I am in AZ and I was quilting that quilt when it was 116 outside. . . I was sweating like crazy! Dad lives in MN so warm is important.

Lisa, I read that post about using double cotton batting. I am going to have to try that and maybe I will this time if someone comes on and tells horror stories about wool.... Cindy Needham recommended wool batting in her class on Craftsy. She said it has 'memory' so does not lose its poof in shipping or storage or whatever. It does have a pretty good poof factor

I've used wool batting and love how the quilt drapes. It is warm and soft. I did wash it but did NOT put it in the dryer. I hear that's where you will get shrinkage. I let it air dry in the kitchen over some chairs and it did not take very long. I'd use it again, but only in a special quilt as it is more expensive that the 80/20 batting I usually use. I got this one at a great discount at a quilt show when a vendor was packing up and he did not want to bring the batting back home with him.

I'm sorry about the trouble you're having with your quilting! Yes, some days the seam ripper is my best friend. It can be very frustrating.

Maybe you need to change your user name. lol

Yes, "Murphy" has visited me with his laws many times and there are days when I just park my behind on the couch in front of the TV because whatever I touch otherwise turns to junk.

Well the good news is that after all that I was able to get another 6 blocks done without incident LOL I have dad's quilt sandwiched, stitched in the ditch and started FMQ. Do not like what I have done so will likely get the seam ripper out. That's not the law kicking in, that was just me trying something and not liking the result. Lesson learned! Trying something new ON a quilt is probably not the best idea in the world haha
