I guess this is a personal preference question. I bought a bamboo type runner and it falls about 6-7'' over the sides. I have this beautiful Japanese Koi fabric that would be really nice for a runner. Do you like yours to stop at the end of the table, go over or just a little mat in the middle? I might sell some, because I have a lot of it. Making one for me first :)
I like them to stop near the end of the table. If it hangs over the edge my grandkids always seem to catch the ends and pull off the cloth while attempting to sit down.
If I had one, I would prefer it to be a little mat in the center.
I like them in the center too....hanging over would create a disaster w/the little grandkids.
Little mat in the center is my preference and that is what I have on my dining room table
I don't care for the drop downs on tables - keeping it all on top looks cleaner to me.
Really glad about this thread, since I'm planning to make a table runner and matching place-mats for my nephew & his fiancee. I've seen them at stores in lengths from 48" to 72", so I guess it's just a matter of personal preference. I like to think of a table runner as a sort of "place-mat" for the serving dishes and centerpiece. Therefore, I would make it long enough to run from the place-mat at one end of the table to the place-mat at the other end. Does that make sense?
I may be the odd one out here, but I like them both ways. Some are fitted to just sit inside the edges of the table, others have a small overhang of just a couple of inches at the longest edges, (kitchen table is oblong) while other have a 5 to 6 inch overhang on all side. I also have octagonal tables in the living room, where I use a circular cloth first and then put another one overtop but is much shorter so that I get a 'layered' effect.
When I made some dresser scarves for my kid's dressers, they overhang on only the ends by a good 6 inches for each end. The front is kept to the edge so it doesn't interfere with opening the dresser drawers (or getting caught in them when being closed.)
It does Sally. I was looking at my fabric more and it's sort of 'artsy'. When I took classes in art you are told to use uneven numbers. Five fish would be to long and three is just right. That would be the length you explained :)
I like the look of doing it both ways. I think it depends on how you live. My dogs are both very big and if they walk under the table their fur sticks to anything hanging over. The nature of a Malamute because they are brushed daily. For me no hanging down.
I usually make placemats in matching fabric to the table runner, so the runner is more in the 50" range, center-of-table type. But truly a matter of personal preference and practicality (although my grand kids are all almost grown, they are still clumsy!)
I also like them both ways, A tassel on the end if they overhang is a nice touch.
