Anyone Else Have This Problem?
When I buy JR, I struggle in figuring out what to do with them. So then I buy Layer Cakes and I struggle finding a pattern that I want to make. : P
I know there are plenty of patterns out there but I usually choose the one that need both JR and LC. I'm currently working on finding a pattern for the Ellie Ann JR. The DD has the layer cake on sale. I hate buying fabric without a plan in mind.
With this particular JR, it has a lot of light colors. It would look nice made up into a Jacobs Ladder, but then I would need charms or LC.
I guess there's really no question here other than does anyone else go through this?

Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
Coleen, I know just what you mean! I have the Ellie Ann fabric already that I am planning to make a Dresden Quilt with. I also have the JR in the line, but will give it to my Aunt as she ordered the DD tonight. She usually buys a ton of yardage, which I feel the pain of when I go over to her house to try and help her organize. My cousin, also a quilter, told my husband that all that disorganization is his future. LOL...so I talked my Aunt into buying the LC tonight.
Boy, did I make a short story long! But you know what? That's what it's like talking to me in person! I start with one subject which leads into another because I seem to think they go hand in hand.
So, to answer your question...I think the Jacobs Ladder or even Katie's Quilt would be pretty. What say you?

Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
A lot of patterns have a Precut paired with a solid of yardage. If you are unsure when you order a precut, think of a solid that might go with it, and order a yard or so of that.
I got the Ellie Ann charms from an Eleanor Burns workshop. I bought cream yardage to go with it. I jumped the gun on this and purchased it before MSQC put it up for sale. Missed some good deals. I'm going to make my charms into a falling charms queen quilt for my bed.

Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
I know how you feel ! My problem is that I look at all the wonderful patterns I could use but then I have trouble finding the material.
Happy quilting !

Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
Funny you started this thread I was just going to ask a question and start a thread about JR....so if you don't mind I'll post here and maybe you'll like this pattern as well. I usually shy away from pineapple quilts since they waste a lot of fabric but I have the Harmony JR and saw this on facebook from Bonnie's page and thought with white its perfect. I struggle with JR too, I have 7 so I ordered a bunch of tone on tones to match with them. So what do you think? I like what she does with the waste as well and I'd put those on the back so this one has no waste.

Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
I just remembered, here is a quilt I started, yes...it's a UFO. But, I've made this using yardage cut into 5" squares and 2 1/2" squares. The possibilities are endless if you put your mind to it, which is hard for me to do. haha

I love your quilt! I'm a fall girl so those colors just scream beautiful to me!!

Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
I've purchased several patterns from www.cozyquilts.com. The owner/designer does a monthly design and presents it to her quilt shop customers in YouTube segments. It's called "Strip Club" and the designs are amazing, and all done with 2-1/2" strips. She shows the piecing for each block. She is more laid back than our Jenny, goes slower, but explains very thoroughly. It is still very entertaining. You might try watching some of these videos for inspiration for using JRs in some different ways.

Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
ohh yep, I feel your pain! Actually the more pain I have in my neck, the more likely I am to hunt fabric online in the wee hours with NO clue what to do with them :icon_rolleyes: I really like the 1 Layer Cake 1 Jelly Roll pattern, it makes up so pretty and Fast! Love Jelly Roll quilts too, and see tons of the 3Dudes in color I never think of!!
Jelly rolls - got some from Big Lots (not exactly wonderful quailty, but cheap)... and only about 5 varied fabrics. I've been using them as Sashing in quilts, Binding works too. Still waiting for rain to stop enough to get my last quilt began "quilting" so I used the extra squares and jelly roll strips and made a couple matching pillow shams.
ooops uh Sew Perfect I think we have alot in common!!! hahaha Well anyway, yes! I really do buy a lot of fabric with nothing in mind - BUT when sorting through it's like finding tons of great combo's that seem to come just at a time when I see a Great new pattern to try!
Oh we could also use them as "test" blocks! I need to do more of those... will I like a Jacobs ladder in those colors? Instead of doing an entire quilt - whip a few blocks up as a test for the colors? Do you still like them?
Good luck, it's great Jenny and others have new tut's or patterns coming out to keep us busy and thinking :-)

Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
I've stopped buying pre-cuts for the most part because I have so much trouble deciding what to do with them.
-
Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
Jean, thanks for that link! So many strip patterns, now I need more JR's!!

Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
Pam and Nicky Lincott have several books out mainly about jelly rolls that have a lot of great patterns. Most use one jelly roll paired with a solid fabric of your choosing.

I think it would be so beneficial if M* would recommend some solids to go with the pre-cuts on the DD. They would sell more fabric and we would get a bit more for our shipping $.

Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
I have several jr and lc or charm packs waiting to be made into something. I usually buy a yard or two of a coordinating print or solid to go along with the precuts. My problem is that I have a pattern in mind when I buy something, but then I change my mind unless I start on it right away. I guess I just overthink this stuff. Happy that I am not the only one with this problem though.

Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
Thanks for the link on the pineapple block...I think that is doable for me with the 2 1/2 in strips...sure is pretty.

Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
Usually I only buy fabric with a specific project in mind. Occasionally I just can't leave some fabric/pre-cuts behind because I fall in love with them. Those are the ones that haunt me because I sit for months looking at them and have no idea what to do with hit. I held a Swirl JR for months then the falling charms quilt tutorial came out and it was still a month or more before I decided to use that JR for that quilt. When I fall for a pattern it makes it a lot easier to use that and go buy fabric/precuts with a finished project in mind.
You are not alone.

I just love the Ellie Ann fabric. I have been very tempted to buy more with the recent DD s but there is so much more I want to do with other fabrics, too.
I made a Kim Bracket design with a EA jelly roll. I pulled out the orange tones and used them for another quilt, can't find that picture.Attachment 52212
When I buy a DD or precut elsewhere I usually buy a yard or two of one of the small prints for borders or binding so I will have something that matches and usually expect to add background as well.
The first class I ever took was the pineapple blossom from Bonnie Hunter and it was reasonably easy to do and since you used all the little cut off pieces it didn't waste much if anything.

Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
Misa, I love this quilt! You should finish this one girl! It is beautiful!

I am like you Lisa...however, when I buy material I usually end up buying more than I need because I love it! Crazy I know! I rarely buy precuts, I prefer having that large piece of material.

No HST in the quilt at all, lots of strips and what F&P calls flippy corners. Like I said it is a Kim Bracket pattern from a recent book of hers. Amazon.com: kim brackett quilt books
I think it is in the Beauties book. Irene's Vexation

This is exactly my problem. I'm overwhelmed. If you look in my notes section you will see the list of all the tutorials that I want to try. I have no idea how I'm going to decide!! Then I look at the fabric and it's soooo pretty. I get afraid to mess it up.

The Ellie Ann LC has been on my wish list since I joined here so when I saw it was the DD I bought it...AND a JR. LOL. I now have 3 free shipping orders (you know what that means$!) placed with M* and I haven't sewn the first thing yet!
I just wish I could get my sewing machines out of my storage unit in NJ, but we would literally have to empty about 3/4 of the unit to reach them. Poor planning on my part, but I knew I wouldn't be able to be crafting while I'm trying to pack up and move, so I thought, "get them safely out of the way first". I had no idea that when I packed all my creative life (sewing, scrapbooking, painting etc) away it would be gone from me for close to 3 years now. :icon_sniff:
So apparently, in order to cope...I buy fabric. Lots of fabric. But I save $5 every time! That's got to count for something. ;)

Jean, thank you for letting me know about this site. They have a lot of good patterns, etc... I even ordered one. : )

Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
I purchased two JR last year with no particular project in mind. Yesterday morning I was inspired to try to make a quilt in a day, start to finish. I almost made it...I finished a throw today using one of the JR. I used the MSQC tutorial "Amazing Jelly Roll Race" as a jumping-off point. It was not a work of art, but it turned out cute. And it was the perfect gift for my friend who came home from the hospital today. She was touched and especially surprised when I told her I started it yesterday!
All this to say, JR are a great way to say "I love you" with a quick project. I posted the picture on my wall.

Re: Anyone Else Have This Problem?
I'll buy some and then find that while they all go together - some of the colors don't work with each other. I've had reddish browns, greenish and yellowish browns in the same pack. I wind up either tossing the extras if I have a friend that doesn't want them. I don't have the patience to sell them, and since I don't think much of where I live, I won't donate them, either.
