DD today -Lapel Stick- What is it?
Can someone explain the "Lapel Stick" to me? I don't understand what it is. It says it replaces basting & spraying, but it looks like a glue stick. I'd have to wipe the glue stick across the whole backing/batting/top to hold it all in place? That can't possibly be right, it would take forever!
What do you use it for?
Thanks
Susan
Re: DD today -Lapel Stick- What is it?
I think most use it for paper piecing. It washes out too. I got a free one on a large order:) I'm saving it for a string quilt You only use it for the first strip though.

it pretty much is a glue stick. lol
Re: DD today -Lapel Stick- What is it?
Oh OK, that makes more sense for a small project. I couldn't picture myself crawling around trying to glue stick a bed quilt! LOL
Re: DD today -Lapel Stick- What is it?
I just use a washable school glue stick instead.
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't try a whole quilt with it. It does work great for holding small bits together. I've used it when making these circle blocks

Also great for auditioning applique locations. A little dab will hold the item in place and yet it's easy to pop off and reposition. The glue washes out easily.
Re: DD today -Lapel Stick- What is it?
I actually tried it once for a lapel that wouldn't lay flat, no luck. But as many people who are doing hexi quilts now, they probably thought peope might like to try this.

My favorite basting glue....Amazon.com: Roxanne Glue Baste-It 2 oz.: Arts, Crafts & Sewing
I found it locally. The skinny little tip is so awesome. Tiniest little drops! I love to use it on mug rugs. I do self binding on those and like the binding part small, very hard to pin. It washes out too. When it runs out I'm going to try washable school glue in it. To get the empty bottle and tips is expensive!
edit..the trick to use it is some clothes pins and a nice break with a cuppa. :)
Re: DD today -Lapel Stick- What is it?
I thought the lapel stick was for applique? In any case that is what I use it for even though I am just starting with applique. Now having said that I keep hearing that washable glue sticks work just as well and they are certainly cheaper. I am going to give those a try. Has anyone else tried them?
Re: DD today -Lapel Stick- What is it?
The lapel stick is nice because it won't dry hard like most glue sticks. Mom uses it for paper piecing stuff mainly, and then it doesn't gum up the needle when she sews, because we all know that woman would just sew right through anything, we have to give her tools to not break her machine :)
Re: DD today -Lapel Stick- What is it?
Funny! Sometimes I have to wait until it dries a bit before sewing so I don't gum up my needle!
Re: DD today -Lapel Stick- What is it?
I'm laughing over here because I can just see Susan crawling around on the floor with a glue stick and her Quiltzilla. Seventy-three glue sticks later she's covered in puffs of batting and the backing fabric is stuck to her rear end.
Ha, Jenny and I must be a lot alike in sewing through anything. I mean how many people remember being taught in Home Ec. to sew right over the pins holding the pieces of that stupid looking jumper they made us make? We weren't supposed to pull them out until the seam was finished. Oh so many girls tried their dress on with pins still in it.

lol I was picturing that too.
I had a machine at one time that was advertised as 'can go over pins'. I think it was a Kenmore. Does any company say that anymore?
Re: DD today -Lapel Stick- What is it?
Jeez, my Kenmore could sew through pins. They'd break in half and the needle would still be good.

I also use washable glue sticks similar to that for applique work.

LOL Karen that is the same thing I was picturing - how can I baste Quiltzilla with a glue stick?!?!?!
Re: DD today -Lapel Stick- What is it?
I bought some when I was making the Wacky Web quilt last fall...I don't care for it at all.
Re: DD today -Lapel Stick- What is it?
I got it this morning - cause it was FREE (or $0.02), but still. I really don't have a use for it yet, but it was FREE. I just can't pass that up - plus it gave me a chance to get a couple of other little items I wanted.
