I have seen something similar done using fixed rate boxes from the post office. i suppose the success depends on how well you can match the height of you machine. I do know from experience just covering your machine with a large piece of vinyl will help your quilt glide. just make sure sure you have it secure so it doesn't shift or you will sew it to your quilt(like i said "from experience" here)
