    Default Damaged Iron

I had a group come to my house today to quilt. One lady didn't fully realize how hot the iron was. She put it down on her fabric and (not sure why) the fabric melted onto the iron. (fabric didn't fare to well either.) The residue is pretty big. Any good advice on cleaning it off the iron?

that's too bad. If the fabric melted, I would guess that it was either a nylon or polyester blend. If it was my iron, i probably would use an old towel or denim, something rough and thicker than quilt fabric , but 100% cotton, and I would get it hot and see if I could clean some of it off by ironing. Then I would buy the iron cleaner stuff that comes in a tube and use that to clean the rest off. From what you describe, I think I would get several tubes. Good luck!

I know Joann carries it, and I think maybe Walmart does too.

If it's a stainless bottom, cold iron and sos. If it's Teflon, it should peel off.

Michelle, I looked on line for this and all I could find was "Mr. Clean Magic Eraser" Is that it or do I need to keep searching?

The dollar store carries the magic eraser thingies too. They are like a dense white foam sponge.

Brook, you can get the Magic Eraser in your grocery store where the laundry cleaning supplies are. Walmart might also carry them. I actually use mine on the iron when it's hot. I don't wet the eraser and just wipe it on the soleplate. It works great! I'm not so sure how well it will work for your problem but it's worth the try. You won't be wasting your money if it doesn't work. Those erasers are so great for there intended purpose as well as iron cleaning.

I would try getting it off first with the iron hot. If it melted on, it should melt enough to clean it off.
