Shugg's time is drawing near....
In a earlier post i told ya'll about my dog Shugg. We found out 06/03 she has cancer. The vet said 2 days to a few months......reality says 35 days. I'm grateful to have had this time to say goodbye. Honestly it has been torture. She is so stoic. When we arrive home she dances like a puppy. DH gave her a bath tonight, and she ran and played, you could see how much better it made her feel. Tomorrow I have a appointment to have her put to sleep. The cancer is in her mouth, and it has become almost impossible for her to eat or drink. We have decided the kindest thing to do is let her go before her suffering gets any worse. I know this is the right thing to do, but I'm feeling very cowardly about it. Difficult doesn't even begin to cover this. Our vet promised I can stay with her. Dh has a spot picked out for her resting place in our yard, so I will be bringing her home. Please pray for us tomorrow. I pray I have the strength to see Shugg through this, and to ease things for DH. He is taking this so much harder then any of us.
Heartbroken,
Liz

I am so sorry for Shugg, you and your family. My heart breaks for you. It is a hard thing to make that decision but sometimes the greatest act of love is to let them go.

Re: Shugg's time is drawing near....
So sorry to hear this...just remember this is for the dog; not for you and hubby and you will get through it....my BFF has lost three of her pets just this summer alone and did what you are doing!

Re: Shugg's time is drawing near....
I hate, hate, hate having to face what you are facing, but continue to get another pet. It never gets easier, but we try to do the best we can for them. My sympathy is with you and hubby.

Re: Shugg's time is drawing near....
Dogs are family. When my dog had to be "put down" the doc said she didn't know how he was still alive. But, I know he didn't want to leave us. She sent me a beautiful card with a poem about the rainbow bridge. You'll meet again.

Re: Shugg's time is drawing near....
I feel your pain. I was reading your post and tears came to my eyes. My hubby and I had to put our dog down in 2006 because of cancer. I still miss him. Hubby brought him as a 8 week pup when we were dating in Nov of 1995. He lived 11years. They are truly man's best friend. May you and your husband find peace and comfort in the precious memories you made with Shugg. May you also find peace knowing that the ultimate act of love was not to allow him to suffer anymore.
PS: I know you are not thinking about it right now, but make sure you get another "best friend" in Shugg's honor.

Re: Shugg's time is drawing near....
So hard! Our dog is so much part of our family! Just read an awesome book and the narrator is a dog named Enzo. Book is called " The Art Of Racing In The Rain". Beautiful story - to read when you are ready. A fiction book of a dog telling his life story from the perspective a dog.

Re: Shugg's time is drawing near....
Dear Liz,
I had to put down my cat a couple of years ago. I know you hate to see her suffer. My son is a Veterinarian. He always says its the best thing to do for an animal before they suffer too much.
Hugs

Re: Shugg's time is drawing near....
Hi Liz,
I'm crying as I write this. I too know your pain. We had to decide to put our precious family dog of 12 years and before that a sweet cat to sleep. To help me get through it I told myself that my dog and cat would do the same for me if they could, so I wouldn't suffer. Our vet said we'd know when it was time and we did know. You reach that point where you stop feeling sorry for yourself missing them already and see that they are suffering. It's an act of love but so heartbreaking. It's been over 3 years and I'm still feeling that pain of missing them so. Prayer helps.

Re: Shugg's time is drawing near....
I'm so sorry ~ but as one who just went thru this 7 days ago I can fully understand. I was in the room with Summer (14 y/o Chow) when she crossed her bridge and it was really a peaceful experience for her. She had suffered a minor stroke earlier in the day and we knew it was her time.
Just remember you love Shugg enough to let her go ~ and that is the greatest gift you can give her at this time of her life. I will keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers,

So happy you had some days before it was time. Gosh they are our beloved family members and to be strong, stay with them and say goodbye -- we loved you always. That is the gift you give back for all their unselfish love.
I'm so sorry it hurts so much, but know our hearts and prayers are with you and yours.

Re: Shugg's time is drawing near....
Liz, by the time I was done reading your post my tears were flowing. I feel your pain & your loss. As an adult, I have not had to face this yet....but our dear Bandit who was a puppy it seems "just yesterday" is already 5 1/2 yrs old. Beginning to see the gray hair on his snout....knowing he is getting older. Praying that some awful disease doesn't cut his time with us short. I am so sorry for your loss, but you know you are making the right decision for Shugg although your heart breaks. Warm hugs & prayers are being sent your way.

Re: Shugg's time is drawing near....
Adding my tears to yours.... I know how hard this part of Loving is.

Re: Shugg's time is drawing near....
Thank you all for your words of comfort, kindness, and prayers. I took today off work so I was able to sleep with Shugg last night. I must say not much sleep for me, but alot of belly rubs for her. Gave her a big breakfast and now we will snuggle until time to go. Thank you so much for telling me this is the right thing to do. I was going to take her Saturday, but simply couldn't. She is so strong, and loves us so much.....she simply will not give into the pain. This makes her condition deceitful in it's severity. I've taken some goos pics over the last few weeks and will share when I can,
Love,
Liz

Re: Shugg's time is drawing near....
Liz, I lost my Miniature SchnauzerGreta Garbo almost three years ago. I held her while a fantastic compassionate vet wlaked us through it and stayed with his hand on my knee and her. She had cancer, threw a clot and she looked at me saying "I can't do this any more Mom". It was the hardest thing. But it was best for her.
You are doing the best thing for her...and that is what is foremost in your thoughts. It isn't fair to make her suffer. TAke her in her blanket that smells like home so she won't be so upset.....
you are in my thoughts and prayers...and remember the rainbow bridge is there for her with all her friends waiting on the other side....
peace..........

Re: Shugg's time is drawing near....
So sorry you have to go through this. We put our dog to sleep last Aug. it was so hard but vet said I could stay with him. He stayed on my lap and peacefully went to sleep. I was glad it was so humane. He was with us 18 years but still cried like a baby all the way home. When animals are so ill it's so hard to make that decision. Will stay a prayer for you and family
