Default Vintage Bernina 811 verses 1922 Singer Model 66

The Bernina needs a new foot control. Rest in good condition. It has good reviews on Google and does have zig zag, although not sure that is needed with my Jenome on hand.

The Singer is beautiful! in pristine condition. Straight stitch only.

There are other older Singers with zig zag also for less than $100 some less than $50. Just trying to decide which way to go. Here is an example:

I am wanting this for a second machine to do piecing and such when I have my Janome working on quilting something. I also want it to teach my 12 yr old son some sewing basics.

    What would you do?
    Be blessed,
    Sandy

I have that same vintage Bernina, purchased in 1976. Still sews like a champ. I had to replace the foot control a number of years ago. Mine is called Mini-matic, it's the little brother to the 811. Mine Cost $800 back then, the 811s were $1200. For $50 it seems like a great bargain. Hope it has all the feet and accessories. Makes a fantastic buttonhole if you do garment sewing. You know you can get this serviced easily, more so than one made in 1922.

Electronic? I don't think so, everything on mine is mechanical, the 811 just has a few more features, but I don't think it is electronic. Just look at all those manual dials!

Yes, I saw the 'electronic' and knew they didn't know what they were talking about. LOL
    Good points, Jean.

Some mechanical Berninas have electronical speed foot control. Maybe it is what they mean. (It is a kind of button under the foot control so that you adjust it to the pace you are confortable with and always have a regular speed).

I have no money for another machine (I have two Vikings) and no place to put one, but this forum always makes me want another one! That mosaic table looks awesome to me. How unique is that? The vintage Singer is beautiful, too. Let us know if you bring any one of these babies home!

I don't have room for another machine to be set up all the time. The one in the mosaic table would have to be taken out and made portable. I don't have the money for an expensive machine but $100 or less I can handle. For sure I will let you know if I end up with one.

I've been tempted all afternoon to check out what's available around here on Craig's List! It is fun to look for new machines, especially old ones. They are so cool. Before I started to quilt I never understood why anyone would need more than one machine. Now I totally get it. Have fun making a decision, Sandy!

Cyndi, I guess I really didn't understand the need for more than one either. When I bought my Janome I traded 3 in and one of those I will always regret not keeping.
I called the sewing center in the area and the guy has the foot control for the Bernina but of course he has a list of reasons why I should just invest in a new, inexpensive machine from him. Can't get parts, going to have more money in it, etc. I told him I wanted something that is going to take really heavy things when I need it and he then told me to go ahead and give it a try.LOL

Neither of the people have gotten back to me so we will see.
