Since it's flannel (and oh so cute) would you sew the top together and then wash before putting the backing on?

No. You have nothing to protect the seams from raveling. The quilt top will most likely fall apart.

Where does the prewashing flannel fall in then? Maybe serge it?

I wouldn't worry about it. Just use a high quality flannel for backing and wash once the quilt is complete.

If you are really worried about it, put them inside something else so they can't move around, like one of those mesh bags for washing small delicate items. Close it up tight and throw it in the machine on gentle cycle. There should be very little fraying if any at all. Another thing you can do is get the water really hot in a large container and soak them until the water is cool. Roll them tightly in a towel to remove the excess water. Iron them dry with a dry iron, no steam. That will do the job of pre-shrinking. If you're worried about colors running soak the darks and light separately.

Oh, dear... I saw the title of this and thought, "No, my girls all shower on their own..."![]()
