    Default Sticker shock at Joann's

Received Joann's email about their latest sale and the price of their fabric shocked me. If I shop there or order on line I will make sure I have a 50 or 40% coupon to use. Cloud 9 fabrics were cute and very modern looking but what a price!

    Here's what I saw,
Cloud 9 Premium Quilt Fabric- Flower Bed Blue
    sale 11.24 reg. 14.99

I found several prints in the designer collection that gave me glitter eyes, but unless they have a 50% sale, I won't get them, since they were $12 a yard. I'm not just buying now, I'm buying with a purpose until I have more money to spend, so its not an easy thing to do, leaving fabric behind. But I agree with you - sticker shock!!!

fabric is so expensive, I can't afford it unless I have the coupon. Join online and you will get additional coupons and you can use them with the mailer ones and the newpaper ones...all at the same time as long as the UPC scan code is different. And they will take 1 each of any competitor and you can use them all in the same visit/purchase.

I also use them to buy the spray adhesive for the quilts..that stuff is $13 a can! So I use the 50% off coupon on that.

Agreed. They aren't any cheaper than some of the LQS on the top quality fabrics. Their hook is the coupons and the sales.

Bargain hunt & shop smart my quilty brothers and sisters!

The Cloud 9 is a 100% organic cotton fabric with 200 count thread. Maybe that's why it's costing an arm and a leg. I went to Hancock's fabrics to get some spray baste and when I saw the price of $17.95, I went home and used pins!

Since sewing and home crafting have had a resurgence, providing $30-$40 billion industry, I guess everyone wants to jump on the band wagon and make as much money as possible. That's fine for the businesses, but tough on our pocketbooks. I'll will continue to shop with coupons and take advantage of sales.

No Kidding! I just bought 2 layer cakes and 3 yds of fabric, cost over $110 and I still have to get batting and backing for my GD's quilt. If it wasn't for her birthday, I wouldn't have bothered, but each grand kid has to have a special quilt as I promised them. My GD loves the fabric and I didn't want her to be disappointed, so I popped out the credit card. At these costs, I'm going to have to limit how much quilting I can afford!

The price of fabric in the UK is terrible. 1 metre of fabric is £12 to £14. Jelly roll is £29.95 as are Layer cakes. Charm packs are £9.95.
We don't have many shop stockists so usually have to pay postage on top of those prices. At least you do get coupons over ther which are unheard of here.

Holy crap! That means that, at today's conversion rate, the manufacturer is making almost 50% in currency translation! For those of you not good at the math, 29.95 in British Pound today equals 45.92 in the US, 48.07 in Canada, 49.43 in Australia, and 35.31 in the Euro. Basically, the manufacturer is swapping the dollar sign out for the pound sign, and reaping the rewards. And don't try to tell me that the shipping cost is 50% of the good - even with tariffs, that isn't possible.

At present fabric prices my guild's Project Pillowcase may cease to exist or will have to greatly reduce the number of pillowcases we make and donate each year. Our annual guild budget is $200 which doesn't go far since we make and donate about 1,000 pillowcases a year. We rely on fabric and money donations from guild members and friends and search out places to buy good fabrics at low prices. Often use Joann's coupons to by Happy Birthday fabrics as they are always requested by the social workers who work with the kids in the hospitals. At times a LQS donates partial bolts to us when they get new shipments and need the shelf space.
