Default Nancy Zieman - adjustable elastic waistband video?

I am not normally a garment sewer, so this has me stumped.

I saw a Nancy Zieman episode that she showed how to do an easy adjustable elastic waistband, by leaving an opening on the inside of the waistband, but didn't leave any raw edges and a button. I found the elastic with button holes already in it, but I can't find the video. It was an episode that she did on elastic - apparently, it is over 12 months old and I can't get to it on the PBS website. I have also searched youtube. Does anyone know how she did this?

I am making the charm skirt, but it is a bit big for the child I am sewing it for and want to make the elastic waistband adjustable so that she can wear it longer. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! Lisa

Oh, I remember that one.. yes it was quite awhile back. The Elastic was fastened inside the waist band (anchored). Brought out and buttoned at the waist so it fit.. Gosh I am NO good at explaining things, Lisa. Maybe some of our seamstress ladies ( who do costumes) will be able to explain it better.

I do a 1/4 seam to make an opening that doesn't fray. I do this on opposite sides of the waist so I have two. Then in that opening I tack down the elastic with the button so the button doesn't move. Then I just pull over no more than 2 inches of the elastic to secure and tighten the waist to the right size. When the kid grows I unbutton it and cut the button off for further use. I have no one to pass down the boys clothes to so I never needed to keep the button there.

Sounds like a good trick. Costumers use pins to do the same things, we don't need it to hold up past the run of the show. And we don't care what it looks like on the inside! Just git'er done!

She did some easy trick to leave the opening on the inside of the waistband that didn't leave raw edges. I tried some variations on it, but I always ended up with a raw edge somewhere....guess I will go buy some of that fabric glue stuff to prevent fraying...

Lisa, have you looked on Nancy's website? www.nancysnotions.com I'll bet you can email them and ask, if you can't find a tutorial on the site.

Unfortunately, the episode I want is an older one and I would have to purchase the dvd. I guess I am just a cheapskate

    Lisa,
Take a look at a pair of the adjustable waist pants they have in the kids department. That will help with how they are constructed.
It looks like a big button hole that the elastic feeds through.
Press under & sew the 1/4" seam to give the elastic casing a finished edge. Then press the next portion of the elastic casing so you have a good crease to measure by, then fold it back open. Mark the spot for the button hole(s) and the button(s) on the part of the casing that is the farthest away from the skirt. It will be the inside waistband once you finish.
Sew the button hole BEFORE you finish the casing for the elastic. Attach the button. Fold the casing back down and stitch it in place.
Thread the elastic through the casing in the garment. If there is a back seam, anchor the elastic securely there. If not, try to find a not-so-obvious place to put the anchoring stitches (short stitch length and two rows of them) on the waist band. Once you pull the adjustable elastic through, it appears that they tuck the end over and stitch it to keep the stuff from unraveling.

Good luck! I'm sure it will turn out fine!
