    Default String quilts

On another thread a member mentioned the DD today (spider web). It reminded me of this that I have saved. Has anyone made one of these before? It sure looks therapeutic and fun.

That sounds fun! Christmas is a little close for me though. Spring or summer or one color wave? I would be up for it!

I love doing string blocks! It is very freeing. Fabric foundation is nice to do as long as you can find something that won't shrink up under the iron (some broadcloths do this and it can distort your block). Paper foundations are fun too - I use coffee filters that I iron flat and trim to 6" square. Just becomes a pain to pull the paper out when you're ready to start piecing blocks together.

A Christmas swap would be fun! I have a bucket full of Christmas fabric strings for a future string quilt.

Here's one I'm currently machine quilting (on a table top machine - Bernina 820) for Quilts of Valor. I began by using an orphan block in the center and donated units around the center star - round robin style.

I have a terrific old quilting book from the 70's packed with groovy groovy stuff, but one or two projects I'd love to make. One of them is the spiderweb string quilt, I'm pretty sure it's on a fabric foundation.

Just a tip for using fabric foundations guys, cut your foundations oversize and before marking them, give them a really thorough pressing with a hot steam iron...gets all possible shrinkage out if the way first. I don't prewash fabrics (only flannel) but always foundations.even paper can distort the first time it's ironed and goes a little crispy, preiron it too (no steam tho )

Cheers Pami (who is supposed to be driving lol)
