Learning by my mistakes lol
Ok, so I saw on you tube someone using the basting spray on a wall, so I proceeded to do that on the floor of my screen porch at the cottage. It was a very hot day, and the result was ok, but let me tell you how I did it, so you don't!
I laid the backing wrong side up, sprayed it, then laid the batting on top of that and knelt on it so I could flatten it out and make it smooth....then I sprayed the top of the batting and put down the quilt top and that worked fine. As you see from my picture,...what I should have done was lay out the batting, spray it, then put the backing on top and flip it over in order to put the top on. I was covered, like tar and feather, and it didnt come off easy. The backing was pretty smooth considering I was kneeling over it. And the top was perfect.
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
I love anyone who is brave enough to show off her learning experiences with a smile on her face. Been there, done that!! I thought for sure you'd say that you got spray all over the floor and your socks got stuck down or something similar. I hope you have gone out and bought stock in Goo-Gone.
BTW you may think you are a new quilter, but your wonderful top disproves that.
Thanks - I needed a chuckle about now.
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
Poor Helen - glad it all turned out ok.....
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
You look so cute as a snowperson! The quilt top looks great!
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
Well you got fuzzied up didnt you! Thanks for sharing your learning experience though, I have wondered how to go about using basting spray and appreciate your explanation. I also agree your quilt top is lovely!!
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
I love the picture...Your quilt is really nice...glad it survived! Did you have to throw your clothes away?
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
That sounds like something I would do lol And I'd probably be laughing at myself the whole time for not thinking about it before. So thanks for keeping me from making this mistake at least, but I'm sure there are 1000 more that I'll come up with, I have a knack for it! lol
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
Cute picture...love the quilt....I'll bet you had fun cleaning up...(not)....thanks for sharing...I needed the chuckle too
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
LOL, thank you for sharing, your quilt top looks great, look forward to seeing the quilt once it has been quilted.
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
LOL! After dealing with the spray, you get a healthy respect for it. I remember having batting all over my feet. I then decided to sacrifice a pair of socks as my "Quilting socks". When I do my basting, I put all the layers together then I pull one layer back 1/2 way and spray the the other 1/2. smooth it out the do the same to the nexy ;ayer. Then I turn the backing side up and smooth it out. I'm sure everyone does it differently. : )
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
Brook,
That's how I spray baste as well, however, I only use it on smaller quilts so it's easier to manage. I prefer to pin baste on larger quilts. What a mess! I'm glad you're smiling, Helen. I don't think smiling would have been the scenario if it were me. Your quilt is very pretty,
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
You are awesome! Lol we would be great mates I think, I use basting spray as well...... Hahaha.
I have to spray up my third little quilt today, I am always finding ways to get myself into a jam :)
Great photo - you have made my day. This learning curve we are on sometimes requires a great sense of humour and you sure have that in spades. Your quilt looks sensational
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
Nice quilt - shame about the 'feathers' - glad to see you are still smiling though
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
I did this at my cottage and went for a swim, it wasn't all over my clothes, that outfit is tie dyed. So, when winter comes, what do I do? I don't have a lot of floor room. I know it can go to the guild and they will help pin it. That spray is easy but messy!
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
You look so cute laying on the floor like that!! Mary Ann:icon_happy:
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
Now that is what I call learning the hard way. So happy that you shared, and hope you cleaned up well.
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
Beautiful quilt top. Sorry, but I can't say the same for your hands and knees-LOL. Definitely something I would do though.
Re: Learning by my mistakes lol
Thank you for sharing. You do look cute as Mrs Frosty the Snowman!
