I was asked in today's daily post to put up a photo of my newest antique tape measure. Its not very old, but is very sweet. It only quilified as an antique last year (has to be 100 years old)
The tape is linen and has 13 inches on it, the wood is boxwood. Measures just under an inch, the handle turns and winds the tape back, all working order, I was quite pleased with the latest addition to my collection.Attachment 26865Attachment 26866

Daisy---do you collect all types of antique sewing items or just measuring tapes? I have a small but growing collection of old sewing items, mostly from relatives sewing cabinets and auctions of friends sewing baskets. How did you date this tape? Love it...so cute!

You go by the 100 rule for Antiques too, so do I. It seems to be a crap shoot in the States when you're in shops and in blogs. :)

I only collect tapes. In this case the date in on the actual linen of the tape but you can date silver ones by hallmark obviously and styles help too. The other way is what the tape itself in made of. Silk tapes are usually pre 1880. Lots of books on the subject, the rest is experiance. Be careful of ebay, whilst there are many on there ask questions. There are a lot from 1930 onwards that are advertising items. Lots of really fun ones. I have thought about collecting them but so far am sticking to my criteria
Daisy, that tape is really neat! I collect salt & pepper shakers. I had one set that said, "Occupied Japan." The guy at the antique store said that they were worth $75.00 Dollars because of that. That was back in the 70's. Then, I was dusting one day, and I dropped part of it on the floor and broke it. I was so upset, because of the historical value of "Occupied Japan", and that my Grandmother had given them to me. I have about 400 sets. I also have salt cellars that were made before the shakers were invented. I love the history behind items. I also have an antique knitting machine. Hugs, Jan L.
I am a believer that anything needs to be 100 years old or older to qualify as an antique. It is amazing the number of things you see advertised that don't meet that criteria yet are listed as antiques. Guess the proper way to list those would be as vintage.

It does have to be 100 years old to be an antique but especially in the States, even Antique stores don't go by that. Just check it out when you're in their stores and read their tags. It's really shameful, but I stopped mentioning it to them years ago, been collecting since I was a child with my Mom. :)Quote:

In the UK by law an antique is an item over 100 years old. If knowingly sold as such and it fails to be so it is a fake and an offence. If discribed as an antique and is under 100 years old it is an offence under the trades discription act. It doesn't stop tryers or the innocently confused but............. ignorance is no defence in law either
I love antiques! I started an oil lamp collection but stopped pretty quickly! No place to put them all. That's really neat measuring tape. Never see one that old.

That is soo cool, thanks!!! :) I guess parts of my house definitely qualify!! The original part of the house ie. Kitchen, living/bedroom are over 100 years old!!!!! LOL can't sell it as an antique though!!!!!! LOL comes with very old termites!!!! LOL

Exactly!!! 100 yrs or older = antique, anything newer than that is vintage. Heck even stuff from the 50's is vintage and collectible, depending on what it is. Same with depression glass. Some of it is quite valuable but not antique, yet.Quote:

We have several antique shops near us and most of the items they sell are vintage. We'll go in and browse and looking at things that mom or grandma used...but it's worth it for the memories.
So cute. I love antiques. Never can afford them or have room for them, but I love looking at them.
I never knew that in order to be an "antique" it had to be over 100 years old. I can promise you that some of the local antique shops aren't following that rule! Actually now that I think of it, MIL bought me a "retired" TY (Beanie Baby) monkey at an antique shop in BC about a month ago. It might be 10 years old, but it sure ain't 100! lol And they had a bunch of He-Man and G.I. Joe toys from the 80's that she was telling DH about because she recognized them from his toy collection he had as a kid
