Default You'd think it would be easy...

You'd think it would be easy to take 3 yards of flannel and make it fit the back of a 48" square quilt. You'd think you'd have fabric to spare. You'd think this would be a straightforward process. But that's because you're not me! I measured and calculated and determined to cut it at least 50" in length, then sew it together lengthwise. I measured, arranged, and cut. Which is why I was so surprised to find I had two pieces that were 42 x 45. I managed to sew some additional fabric to the sides to flesh it out, but I'll have this little one inch strip on each edge. Which, really, I'd reconciled myself to until I realized that NOTHING about this fabric is straight or square. Heaven only knows what kind of drugs I was on when I cut it. It just became more and more frustrating as I was trying pin the sandwich all together. (sigh) It's such pretty pink flannel and SOOOO soft. But I think I need to save it for a smaller project and go get some more.
If you can't see it from 50 yards away on a galloping horse, it doesn't matter.

Flannel shrinks very badly, and it also has a tendency to get 'out of square' after washing. My suggestion for future flannel usage is after it is washed fold it is 1/4's and square it up. Especially if you need precise measurements.

What a great idea! Thanks, Marilyn. I'll probably be doing that later this week.
