    Default Lamenting thread choice

In my hurry to see my Dresden plate appliqued onto the background fabric, I chose a most delicious deep rust thread from my stash. LOVE the color, love the sheen (it is a cotton covered poly, but so pretty), love the way the applique popped....all was well. WAS is the word here! I decided it might be a gamble to think I could get 32 plates appliqued with one spool of thread. What if I got down to number 28 and ran out! So before I proceeded any further, I went in search of more thread to match. Alas, this thread color must not be manufactured any longer. I can't find anything close! The closest is a deep maroon, close but blends with 4 blades per plate.....not the rust I love! Now I am thinking, just how old is that thread???? Should I even use it??? Should I rip out the double applique stitch that is so lovely and start over with another color? Should I hold my breath and pray that that one little spool will produce 32 plates???? Is there a way to know how many stitches or how much applique that spool would produce? Should I look for someone else that might have a spool of the same older thread? Help! I am so excited about appliqueing these plates, but I am stuck now in indecision land. Is there some other idea that I haven't considered? HELP????? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post the mfg, thread color - maybe one of us have it and are willing to part with it. If I have it, I know I would, knowing how much it means to you.

I agree with Ruby - manufacturer and code if it is there. Or, if your blocks are all finished, and the top pieced together, perhaps you can find a coordinating thread and plan on doing half one color and half another color. I have a chart in my sewing room that tells how many stitches you can get from a spool of thread - I'll check later and see if it might help you out.
    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

it is a Coats and Clark cotton covered polyester thread. The color number looks like 280. So hard to read. This is an older thread.....not sure what I last sewed with it! There is also another number under the upc code lines.... 81587. Not sure which is the color number. It has a T2 in a circle....not a color number, but not sure what that means. I have looked online here and found a couple of colors that are close.....but will be 100% cotton. Not sure if the sheen would be less and thus show the difference. Still in a quandary, but thanks for the offer.

Thanks, Sandy. Who knew there might be an answer in a chart of stitches!! AWESOME! I had thought of stitching in 2 colors, since I have A and B blocks, but didn't know if that might be too much. I am off to count the stitches in one plate.....ready to do some math.....perhaps there is a solution! Thanks for the hope!

They don't have color numbers listed, but here are all the different colors of the Dual Duty thread that Joann's has listed online. Maybe you can find the one you have. There are a few dark rust colors.

Sorry SuzyQue, I have some Coats and Clark thread but that is not one of them. I would have gladly given it to you. Good luck!

SuzyQue I found a Coats and Clarks Color Cross Reference sheet and the old number 280 is now 7870 Rustana Red is the color name. Hope this helps you.
