Re: Which machine?!?!
Jilli, if you are just starting out, check out the reviews and get the BEST basic model.
It's a big learning curve, if you are just starting out.
Accurate cuts, 1/4" seam, pressing seams comes with a lot of practise.
But then again, I've never come close to 'perfection', but it all seems to fold up pretty sweet in the end...
Warmth and Comfort, all the same.

I'm probably going to go with the Brother. I seen it at a Walmart today. It sure does sound nice. Just hope that I don't get one that is a trouble child. That would be so heartbreaking.
Yeah. It's going to be a long week.
DO NOT let you talk your self out of this. I was the same way when my old reliable started acting up. Just like you I did not want to spend any $ on something for myself. I think you should go for it, and once you learn the basics, you can actually use it to make $, by making little handcrafted things to sell at craft shows and such. It really will benefit the entire family. You can learn to make so many things that you currently have to buy. Every once in a while we just have to do something for ourselves.

Re: Which machine?!?!
Haha Yes Debbie! Those are wonderful ideas and I hope that I will be able to do those things and many many more.
I thought about just getting a simple basic one. But I want to get many years of use out of it. And if I learn and grow with what I can create then I would have to buy an upgrade down the road. So, for me, getting something that is above what I can do at this time would be money best spent. Hope that makes sense.

Re: Which machine?!?!
I don't have any advice to give, because right now I use my dressmaker II (think "Lil' Sew & Sew") and my MIL's old Brother (aka. The Beast!) from the late 60's/early 70's. I'm reading all of the comments though because "Santa" is bringing me a new sewing machine for Christmas and any tips on which one to choose will certainly help
Jilli, let us know which one you go with and how you like it.

I bought one for DD a few years ago. she loves it. I've sewn on it a bit and really like it. DH bought a brother 5500PRW for me this past year. doesn't have quite as many features as CS6000, no quilting table or walking foot came with it but for the price it is very nice.

Re: Which machine?!?!
Jill, You might also consider going to a sewing machine shop. Sometimes they have interest-free plans. You'll buy from a company that stands behind their machines. They'll give you advice if you need it, service, etc. I purchased one of my machines that way. It's sort of like lay-a-way but you get to take it home with you now. (Pay it by the deadline otherwise you'll pay a lot of interest.) The plan I had was for a year. If you go this route you can purchase a machine that will have more features. You can demo any machine and the salesperson will take time to answer questions. I have an AllBrands store not far from me in California. I purchase most of my machines through them. Trade-ins can save money, too. AllBrands had a deal I couldn't pass. I bought a machine for my girls by trading in another machine. They took any machine in any condition. Just a thought.
Also, I have purchased on-line. I couldn't pass up a deal I saw on a Janome Jem Gold. I can't remember now, but I imagine there is a period of time when you can return it if you're not satisfied. It was an inexpensive machine so I was willing to take a chance.
I think it's great Walmart has machines available to buy. I've heard others mentioning owning one of these and I haven't heard any complaints. Good luck! Let us know what you end up getting. It's always a "high" for us seamstresses when someone comes home with a new machine. LOL

If you do go to Walmart they do have a intermediate machine in your price range.

Re: Which machine?!?!
I love my Brother Sewing and Quilting machine I got this summer. I got it at Wal-mart and it was under $200. It came with the walking foot too which was great!
Congrats and I know you will enjoy your new machine.

Re: Which machine?!?!
How would I find a sewing machine shop?? lol My luck I would have to drive to Louisville or even Indy. I would imagine Evansville has one or some. But those big ole cities scare the begee's outta me!!!
LOL nevermind. I just googled it. Indy and that area looks to be it. Booo. I can't drive up there.
I would buy from online if I knew anything about machines. So I do think that getting one from Walmart will be a better choice right now.
Sigh. I'm so excited. I am totally having a hard time with how slow this week feels to be going. I don't like wishing my life away and so I don't want to say I wish it were Friday already. But it sure is hard!
